Default. You've often heard of this poor golfer, Col. Default. Fisher played the colonel again in the final round. But for that first match in the consolation, Fisher could have said that he won a golf prize hy heing trimmed, 7 and 6. That was nearly the experience of James H. Gay, Jr., Philadelphia Cricket Club, who had surely a hydraulic, and things like that, experience in the third sixteen. Gay is one of the leading golfers up home and qualified here, thanks to physical ailments partly, with an 83-97 180. Gay was not feeling too well the first day of maich play and defaulted his match ; partly because nobody knew where he was. He was put in the consolation flight for Thursday, when he came down to explain the situation. Then he saw his Hon. Op ponent had defaulted in the consolation flight, and decided that gave Gay another day to recover. The next day Gay drew another default and things looked serious. Gay wanted to play golf by that time, but there wasn't any opponent to be had. There he was in the final round on Friday, right on the score board, and he hadn't hit a ball off the tee in the match play. Some body said there was a prize for the runner-up in the consolation flights so Gay spent the evening before his final match, endeavoring to frame a gentle note of apology for not accepting the final prize, or runner-up's booty. His opponent, E. L. Turner, appeared the next day so all was a bit lovely. Gay won the match, 3 and 2. There was a special division after the sixteenth in which handicaps were used. Charles G. Hub, Torresdale, Philadelphia, one of the two scratch players therein, won the final round from J. W. Lloyd, 3 and 1. Hub won matches where he had conceded from fourteen to eighteen strokes to his opponent. Hub was hardly more proud of the prize he won there than he was of the 79 he made the same week on No. 1. It was the first time Hub had broken 80 on his trip here this season. His card for No. 1 : Out 455, 553, 356-41. In 346, 454, 552-3879. There was so much golf in the 19th annual Spring golf tourney here the past week that it would more than fill this magazine to tell it all so we'd better give the polo critiques, and things, a chance.
