A New Star in Golf World
THE hall mark of class is
written large on the
golf game of Rokuro
Akahoshi, 24-year-old Japanese
royal prince, who startled and
delighted the golfing colony here x
recently by wading through a
field of 319 sharpshooters to
victory in the 20th annual
Spring tournament, largest
simon-pure event on the world’s
links calendar.
Until this Spring meeting of
the knights of mashie and put
ter, Japan never had made a .
dent in the history of the royal
and ancient game. She will do
so often in future. Rokuro will
care for them in large measure
and his example to others of his
race will be such that we can
look for big things from the
far east on fairway and green.
Akahoshi is the Sarazen of
his country. Following Gene’s
rise to fame at the game, Italian
names began to crop up in big
*
tournaments until last year at
Inwood in the National Open
championship 40 former caddy v.
boys, of Italian extraction, en
tered the lists and many carried
on well. The game among
amateurs perhaps will get\ its
greatest forward push, fftDm
Akahoshi’s recent success than
it has known since that day in
.1913 when Frances Ouimet
turned back the invading British
stars, Vardon and Ray, to win
the open title.
As Japanese come and go,
Rokuro is a big man, weighing :
around 185, and as solid as a /
rock? He gives you the impres
sion that he has great strength \
and a look at him making shots
j ust verifies the impression. As
a long-distance hitter he stands
well to the front. When he
times his stroke properly he gets
tremendous distance. Some of
his Pinehurst drives were well
beyond the 250-yard mark, and
