IAL E. Rolfe, youthful Chicago golfer, chalked up his first tour nament win at Pinehurst last week when he defeated Clive Alvord, Hartford, Conn., 5 and 3, in the final contest of the annual Carolina tourna ment. The winner qualified close to the top, and except for a 20-hole match with R. G. Morrison in the second round, he had comparatively easy sailing all the way through. He was even fours for eleven holes in defeating C. S. Strout, 9 and 7, in the first round, and after losing the first three holes to Morrison in the second he succeeded in squaring the contest on the home green and won on the twentieth when he put his second shot to within four' feet of the cup and holed out for a birdie 3. In his final round match with Alvord, Rolfe won two of the first three holes and made the turn 3 up. He lost the tenth to a par 4, but after halving the eleventh he won two in a row which made him 4 up. The fourteenth was halved and a par 3 on the fifteenth gave Rolfe the hole and the match. Rial E. Rolfe, proudly displays the trophy he garnered in his victory over a strong field in the annual Carolina Tournament Alex; W. C. Banta versus H. Newton Marshall; Robert E. Harlow, the medalist, versus Francis T. Keating^ T. J. Bray versus C. E. Petot; Rial E. Rolfe versus C. S. Strout, and R. G. Morrison versus Joe Hotchkiss, the first named winning in each instance.
