Annual St. Valentine’s Tournaments

.%HEN Joseph P. Hotchkiss of the New Haven Country
WClub rather overwhelmed T. Russell Brown of Mal
letts Bay, Vermont, in the final of the St. Valentine's
tournament, he again added to the cumulative evidence that
a medalist does, and frequently too, win a tournament.
More than that, Brown, the runner-up for chief tourna
ment honors, was also runner-up in the qualifying round
which made this pair of promising young golfers outstand
ing in the record entry field. Their respective qualifying
scores were 74 and 77.
Neither player was down to the scoring of the testing
round in the final, which is not unusual.
There were some close as well as one-sided matches in the
finals of the seven divisions and corresponding consolations
which were won as follows:
First Sixteen—J. P. Hotchkiss defeated T. Russell Brown,
6 and 5.
Consolation—G. F. Herdling defeated J. E. McAulilie
5 and 4.
Second Sixteen-—F. H. Mahan defeated L. E. Adams, 5
and 4.
Consolation—C. S. Strout defeated H. Rowbotham, 1 up.
Third Sixteen—C. M. Rudel defeated F. 1. Hamm, 2 and 1.
Consolation—E. C. Keating defeated P. S. McLaughlin,
4 and 2.
Fourth Sixteen—W. Whitcomb defeated E. P. Meriam,
19 holes.
Consolation—G. W. Dodd defeated C. E. Beane, 7 anl 6.
• Fifth Sixteen—W. M. Bright defeated S. W. Hart, 3
and 1.
Consolation—L. H. Gates defeated Col. A. R. Dillingham,
2 up.
Sixth Sixteen—A. C. Hale defeated G. D. Boice, 4 and 3.
Consolation—W. H. Taylor defeated James Barber, 1 up.
Seventh Flight—J. W. Nye defeated J. S. Weigel, 20 holes.
MBS. CHAPMAN THE MEDALIST -
It took a score of 95 to get into the first division of the
twenty-first annual St. Valentine’s tournament forewomen,
which started Tuesday, February 9, without a play-off.
Mrs. John D. Chapman, of Greenwich, winner of the
recent tournament, left her nearest competitor, Mrs. Donald
Parson, six strokes behind in medal testing round, return
