Pines 7184 EXCITING CONTESTS FEATURE OPENING BADMINTON SERIES Pinehurst’s first badminton tournament got under way at the Carolina Hotel yesterday morn ing with a fine field gathered in the ballroom of the hotel for the exciting; matches of the first round of play. There was plenty of action. Form and experience were the deciding factors in all matches, and there were no up sets. The feature contest of the day was between Mrs. E. M. Pullen of New York, a guest at The Carolina, and Mrs. E. E. Palmer of Montclair, N. J., also a guest at the hotel. , In the first game Mrs. Palmer netted several times to lose de cisive points and the first game, which resulted 15-9 in Mrs. Pull en’s favor. In the second game both contestants found the range and performed well on overhead clears and drop shots. Mrs. Pul len’s powerful backhand gave her , quite the advantage. With the j score at 13-all in the second game, Mrs. Pullen elected to take the game at 17-15. In another match which had quite a bit of color to it, Bing Hunter defeated Dr. J. A. Rug^ gles 15-12, 15-13. In the first game of the day Miss Anne Hotchkiss defeated Miss Doro thy Pierce 15-8, 15-9. Others advancing to the quar ter finals were Karl Andrews, Leonard Hibbits, Miss Helen Waring, Bobby Knowles and John j H. Livingston' Jr. The line-up for today: Bobby Knowles will play John H. Liv ingston at 9:09 o’clock this morn ing; Miss Hotchkiss will play Mi's. Pullen at 9:30 and Mr. An drews will play Mr. Hibbitts at 11:30. Spectators are invited.
