EXCITING CONTESTS
FEATURE OPENING
BADMINTON SERIES
Pinehurst’s first badminton
tournament got under way at the
Carolina Hotel yesterday morn
ing with a fine field gathered in
the ballroom of the hotel for the
exciting; matches of the first
round of play. There was plenty
of action. Form and experience
were the deciding factors in all
matches, and there were no up
sets.
The feature contest of the day
was between Mrs. E. M. Pullen
of New York, a guest at The
Carolina, and Mrs. E. E. Palmer
of Montclair, N. J., also a guest
at the hotel. ,
In the first game Mrs. Palmer
netted several times to lose de
cisive points and the first game,
which resulted 15-9 in Mrs. Pull
en’s favor. In the second game
both contestants found the range
and performed well on overhead
clears and drop shots. Mrs. Pul
len’s powerful backhand gave her ,
quite the advantage. With the j
score at 13-all in the second
game, Mrs. Pullen elected to
take the game at 17-15.
In another match which had
quite a bit of color to it, Bing
Hunter defeated Dr. J. A. Rug^
gles 15-12, 15-13. In the first
game of the day Miss Anne
Hotchkiss defeated Miss Doro
thy Pierce 15-8, 15-9.
Others advancing to the quar
ter finals were Karl Andrews,
Leonard Hibbits, Miss Helen
Waring, Bobby Knowles and John j
H. Livingston' Jr.
The line-up for today: Bobby
Knowles will play John H. Liv
ingston at 9:09 o’clock this morn
ing; Miss Hotchkiss will play
Mi's. Pullen at 9:30 and Mr. An
drews will play Mr. Hibbitts at
11:30.
