" ■" 'f. - By DOUGLAS DOA£.. - ;; We don’t know about you, but in spite of the new trend toward Christmas decorations in all shades of the rainbow, we still have a sentimental leaning to ward the good old red / and green. So we’re mightily pleased with the village shops, who are decked out in holiday garb of the traditional hues. Hoot Mon, and have ye seen the gay tartans at Romanes and Patterson? There’s a good bit of red and green for you. Bright plaid patterns in various colors, make up an attractive collection of bagfs, ski r t s, glengarries, dressing gowns and wool slip pers. The Scotch design is fur ther carried out in scarves, change purses, tiny bagpipe pins, and a novel pencil case fashioned like a golf bag with pencils for clubs. A featherweight couch throw of brushed alpaca wool makes an excellent gift. With a hop, skip hnd a jump across the heather we are away to the land of windmills and wooden shoes. Remember the custom of Dutch children of pla cing their shoes before the fire place for St. Nicholas to fill? Foster’s Remembrance Shop has real wooden shoes that will de light the children. Another nov elty you’ll appreciate is the cane with a flashlight in the top, to make night walking easier.' Take warning that you’ll prob ably end up keeping it for your-' self if you buy one of the new pigskin bags at Madame et La Jeune Fille. They’re so wonder fully big and easy to get into. Among other gifty gadgets there are £mall crystal lighters in a tulip design, a tiny flashlight with key ring on one end, and a neat little package of Mendel soaps and bath oils. Incidentally, for the personal touch, you may buy handkerchiefs there and have them initialed in time for Christmas. Handkerchiefs remind us *of Corina’s, where they have some beauties in the way of evening hankies; wispy chiffons embroid ered in dainty sequin designs to match those sequin trimmed gowns. We’ve already told you about the Herb Farm products at the Colony, but we’d like to#add men tion of the kitchen herbs done up as an old fashioned nosegay. New Englanders should appreci ate the Maple Grove syrups and candies there done up in neat packages. The potpourri pack age of herbs is also very nice The cocktail jacket is certain ly becoming a fixture for semi fo^mal or afternoon wear. Some [of the nicest we’ve seen are at rpurcello’s. There , is a very nice | black knit sweater embroidered in multi-colored sequins, and an especially nice sky blue one trim med with hand painted designs which are the latest thing for the evening sweaters. Clow’s Gift Shop has a novelty set of imported Scotch perfumes in the same shaped case as the pencil container we, told you about earlier, except that instead of pencils the bag contains three slim perfume bottles. We liked the modernistic desk clock there. It’s a Seth Thomas, just a round yell ow disk ynarked off in cream enamel. ' - A recent shipment to the Lon don Galleries is the complete col lection of a buyer who has spent several years in China collecting antique art objects. Our espec ial favorite is the set of hand carved jade signs of the Zodiac, but they are only one item in a really splendid Collection. You’ll be enchanted with the two match ing Cork glass bottles there with steeple topped stoppers. Razook’s has a lovely new col lection of Hattie Carnegie cos tume jewelry which includes' necklaces in the newest combin ation of crystal and moonstone beads, at really unbelievably reasonable prices. We like the hand-quilted satin robes • there too. Here’s hoping that gift list is nearly complete, and you’re all set for a jolly holiday season. Local News of Pinehurst CHRISTMAS CANTATA In the Pinehurst school audi torium Tuesday night 63 boys and girls of the high school glee club will present a Christmas Cantata, “The Music of Christ mas.” Miss Annie Marie Choate directs the glee club, and prom ises a fine rendition of this can tata. The choir will appear Tuesday in their vestments for the first time. There is a small admission charge of 15 cents and 25 cents to raise funds to pay for the vestments and the cantata books. If you enjoy music, especially lovely Christmas carols, plan to be present at this performance. James Carter is spending the holidays with his sister, Mrs. Hum bert McCaskill and family. James is attending school at Carolina. Are You Ready for Christmas ? Are our suits and dresses fresh and clean? • Are your linens laundered fresh for the big dinner?
