Here was something for the spectators to lick their chops about. It looked as if Ben was going to lose the one stroke advantage he had over par' and give himself the task of finish ing in par figures from the 14th tee to win. You can take most anything from a Pinehurpt bunker. You can leave the ball there, or knock it out of one bunker and into another. The best of them do it. But Hogan played a per fect explosion shot to within four feet of the cup and grab bed a very welcome par four. This stroke of good fortune and good golf, at a time when Snead’s 67 had shaken him from his position of security, must have^ given Ben new courage for the drive down the stretch. He had saved the precious stroke. He played the 14th like] a master, his drive being long and his iron never gave an, inch on its flight to the green. He rimmed the cup for a three. It became obvious that he was back in groove, and not Snead’s 67 or anything else on earth could stop him. The only stroke he made from here in that even suggested error was his first putt on the 17th green. It stop ped ’ short, and at a distance that could easily have been missed. But he holed it. He then had a six on the final hole to win, and he “breezed,” for the first time in 72 holes. Hogan will win again. The figures indicate it. His age, 2t years, is the perfect age for golfers who aspire to win na tional golf championships. This has been proven by Dr. Harvey Lehman of Ohio University, who studied the ages of 100 golf champions, and found that among professionals the win ning age arch runs from 25 to 34. The tip off on Hogan was his average of 71.63 for thirty three rounds of competitive golf enroute to Pinehurst.
