TIMES-NEWS, Rich Square. N. C., Sept. 30. 1905 Ten Steps Required In Making One Zipper By RONALD CLARK WOODLAND - When this re porter arrived at the Talon zip per plant in Woodland for a story plant manager Tom Boyd said, “I have 10 minutes to explain to you how a zipper is made.” You would thank that Talon would make a Talon zipper but Boyd said that the Woodland plant manufactures a Falcon zipper. Boyd, a native of Erie, Pa,, has been with Talon for 30 years. He became manager oftheWood- land plant in 1958, He said the zlK>er gets its start when the raw materials, tape and metal, are fed into a chain ma chine. The chain machine at taches the metal, referred to as scopes, to the tape through a pulley operation. It is then taken to a steaming and flexing operation to keep it hot and wet before going to the rolling mill which rolls it to size while it is still hot and wet. The zipper then goes to a dry ing area where the tape is dried. If the zipper order calls for an enamel finish it then goes to an enamel machine. The enamel fin ish is used mostly in women’s wear and articles. It then moves on down the line KEEP THE ZIPPER MOVING—These men are responsible for the zipper production at Talon Zipper plant in Woodland. They are from left, J. L. Golden, industrial engineer; L. D. Bowen, chief inspector; Pete Davis, supervisor of planning; W, B, Mar tin, maintenance foreman; T. B. Boyd, plant manager, and H. D, Byrd, general foreman production. conoN PRODUCERS I9G5 YOUR LOAN PRICES ■ 31/32 1” 1-1/32 1-1/16 dKM'rmtf ' T:- ■'S 28.71 29.46 30.Si -r - ^--31.01 SLMPLUS 27.86 28.51 29.26 29.96 LM PLUS 27.26 27.86 28.61 29.26 SLM 26.36 26.86 27.41 27.86 LM 25.81 26.31 26.81 27.21 SGO PLUS 24.51 25.06 25.51 25.66 SGO 23.96 24.41 24.76 25.01 MD LT Sp 27.31 27.91 28.61 29.16 SLM LT Sp 26.01 26.46 26.91 27.21 LM LT Sp 24.31 24.71 25.06 25.31 SM LT GRAY 27.41 27.96 28.81 29.31 MID LT GRAY 26.01 26.56 27.11 27.56 PLENn OF STORAGE SPACE AVAILABLE Instruct Your GInner To Send Your Cotton To Our Warehouses In Jackson Or Weldon Prompt Loans and Advances Made Upon Delivery To Warehouses I NORTHAMPTON WAREHOUSE JACKSON, N. The zippers can be cut In lengths from 1 l/2 inches to 96 inches. Upon completion here they then go to the bottom stop operation where two pieces of chain are fastened together permanently. This is to keep the slider, which opens and closes the zipper, from going past the end of the zipper. The slider is put on after the bottom stop and then a top stop is put on to keep the slider from going past the front of the zipper. The line of zippers, still all at tached on one long tape, is taken to the cutting operation where they are cut into the lengths the customers have ordered. The last operation before reaching the shipping depart ment is the inspection depart ment where they are carefully checked for defects and packed into boxes of 100. Boyd said that the plant uses 200,000 gross yards of tape a day or 1,880,000 yards. The tape comes from a plant in Stanly and the metal comes from one of Talon’s plants located in Mead- ville, Pa. The plant works five days a 160 workers with a payroll of week 24 hours a day and employs $600,000 annually, BUSINESS AND PROFESSIONAL " DIRECTORY Conway Baptist Church To Observe 60th Anniversary CONWAY - The Conway Bap tist Church will celebrate its 60th anniversary with a special service beginning at 10:45 a.m. on Sunday, October lO, A home coming is being held in conjunc tion with the service, and all for mer members are cordially in vited to return for the occasion. After saying good-bye several times to our parents and friends, we were on our way. At lunchtime, we stopped to eat in Fayetteville. Everyone had packed his lunch at home, so we just got a drink. Soon we reached camp and ev eryone was cheering. We met with the staff leader and were shown to our cabins. We unpack ed and made our beds. After supper, we met in the Recreation Hall for a short meet ing. We were given a schedule for the activities at the camp that week. In the mornings afterwe awoke, we had to clean the cabins. We had flag raising and then had breakfast. Right after breakfast we had chore time. Each group had a certain duty, like dining hall duty or cleaning grounds. Then we would have a short assembly and give an award to the cleanest cabin. We left assembly and went to our classes. We had four classes each day: swimming, wildlife, handicraft, and recre ation. The last two days we had an electric class instead of a wildlife class. For handicraft, we made Jewelry boxes for our par ents. After classes the store opened and we could buy candy or drinks. We always had good meals and after lunch was rest period. We could read, write letters, or play quietly. Then we played softball, volley ball, or tether ball for our sports also swimming and canoeing. Each night we had assembly. On Wednesday night we had stunt night and the banquet on Friday night. We could dance after as sembly until vespers. My favorite classes were swimming and wildlife. The first year I moved into a larger room so I could have all my things in there Instead of scattered aroimd the house, and I could have the adjoining bath room. I made a few small im provements last year. This year I have worked on improving my room and bathroom. I rearranged my bedroom so 1 could get to my desk easier and have more room. In Electric Workshop I made a lamp for my desk. In my bath room I made a dresslngtable and fixed a skirt for the dressing table to match the curtains which I made for my room and my bathroom. We fixed some old bookcases which had been taken out of the living room and put them in the end of the hall at my room door for all of my books. We cleaned out and fixed a stor age closet with shelves for my games and toys. This gives me more room in my room. All of the furniture In my room belongs to my sister.
