A high level of Stalk Rot disease plus high populations of the European Corn Stalk Borer are causing the stalk to weaken and fall. Some fields are severely affected and as much as 50 per cent lodging has occurred. Evidence of Stewart’s Disease, Anthracnose, and Rust are present in every field; these pathogens also contribute to weakening the plant. Lodging problems are widespread. Several counties South of us report damage in many fields. Early Harvest Important With the amount of lodging that is already occurring we should give strong consideration to harvesting our crop early. Corn that remains in the field for an extended period of time is subject to heavy field loss this year. Begin Harvest at Maturity If grain is mature, a dark area can be seen by a cross sectional cut of the kernel tip. This condition occurs at approximately 25 per cent field moisture. Therefore, wait until your field moisture is 25 per cent or lower to begin harvest. Harvesting at maturity assures a hi^ test weight and a high feed value. Remember as you increase ground speed of combine for 2'i MPH to Vz MPH field loss will increase over 10 per cent. Good Crop— Strong Price Evidence of a good corn crop and a strong price structure are encouraging. These factors are all the more reason why we should do our very best in harvesting, maintaining grain quality, and marketing. As you are aware, there are many marketing alternatives. Make a selection based on your particular situation. The moisture discount taken at the grain elevators has increased 67 per. cent above last year. Be sure to consider this increase when deciding to take moisture discount or dry on the farm. Drying High Moisture Corn (1) Move corn to drying bins or trailers immediately. (2) Dry high moisture corn in small quantities, a. Peanut Trailers — Fill trailers half full and use heat at 140 degrees until grain is dry. Cool com for storage or delivery to market, b. Bin Drying (Batch Drying) Fill bins 2’-3’ deep and level grain. Set heat at 140 degrees until corn is dry. Cool grain and move to storage or deliver to market. A second 2’- 3’ layer may be added, but heat must be reduced to prevent heat damage to lower layer. (3) Dry corn down to 12 per cent moisture for safe on-farm storage. (4) Be sure to treat grain and bins with a premium grade of Malathion to protect against storage insects. Practice sanitation around bins to help prevent weevil activity. (5) Keep close watch on corn and aeriate as needed while in storage. Samples from many problem fields this Spring indicated a low lime level. Destroy stalks immediately after harvest, take soil samples, and apply lime as needed. Extension Chairman Suggestions property. Weak spots in the stand will be reseeded. A liberal application of fertilizer will be applied to stimulate vigorous growth. By JOHN B. LITCHFIELD ■* Soil Conservation Service-' A conservation plan for the “County Home” farm was delivered to the Northampton County Commissioners and reviewed with them at their meeting on Tuesday of this week. The County entered into an agreement with the Northampton Soil and Water Conservation District several months ago for development of such a plan. Soil Scientist Henry Huntt made a detailed soils map of the property to aid in planning use and treatment of the land. Descriptions and interpretations of the soils information accompany the map. These include not only its capabilities for agricultural use, but also degrees of limitations for other uses as well. A program of improvements is scheduled to be carried out over a period of several years. Revenue from the farm will pay for the cost of the work. Erosion control practices including parallel terraces, diversions, contour farming, grass field borders, and grassed waterways will be used to stabilize the land and reduce excessive erosion. S. Y. Daniel, of Seaboard, reports that parallel terraces have done a good job for him this year. When he was developing his conservation plan a few years ago he was not too enthusiastic at first about building new terraces. He remembered the old crooked terraces his father had built. He readily admitted that they helped hold soil in place, but they just didn’t fit four row equipment. Then he saw some modern parallel terrace layouts and decided to give them a try. The result was a complete rearrangement of the field. Grassed waterways replaced old ditches. Grading was done to smoothe down old terrace ridges and other irregular spots. New terraces were built — broad enough and straight enough that they can be worked successfully with four- row equipment. They are carefully spaced so that the rows work out right, avoiding wasted land. As a result, when the “floods” came this summer in a succession of unusually heavy rains the protection was built into his fields and severe damage was avoided. Rescue Unit Gets Funds RICH SQUARE - The Rich Square Rescue Squad collected $955 in a recent high way solicitation drive conducted here. The additional funds will be used to purchase new equipment for the rescue outfit. Rescue Chief Billy Ivey stated the drive was necessary because the unit had an unusually busy year and additional equipment is needed to meet squad demands. ouick\]n\9# Diversions are being built this week to control runoff water and reduce erosion at Seaboard Liquid Plant Foods, Inc. in Seaboard. Heavy rains caused severe washing of the newly graded land shortly after the plant was established. The diversions will break the length of slopes and direct water to safe outlets.
