PAGE THBEB5- BOCXINGEAH POST-DESPATCH INFLUENZA The Danger arising from Pneumonia and-Tuberculo-tis Following Influenza. (From State Board of Health) Spanish influenza and tuberculosis are communicated in the same way. There is, however, a marked difference in the incubation period. Influenza shows up in from a few hours to a few days after the infection enters the body. Tuberculosis, on the other hand, may not show up for a number of years. The prevention of both these disease is the same. The "flu is spread by the cough and the sneeze, without sheilding the mouth and nose, thereby spraying the air and all persons nearby with the infective material; or it is spread by kiss ing, or by handling things that have been handled by a sick person and then putting the fingers into the mouth without first washing them; or by spitting on the floor or ground; or by using the same towel, drinking vessels, eating utensils that are -used by the sick. But this particular epidemic will in all probability be over shortly. While it is terrific in the number of people made ill, and the number of deaths that it has caused, yet tuberculosis is killing more people today than influenza; it was killing more yesterday, and will be killing more tomorrow; this week, next week, and the next, right here in North Carolina, tuber culosis is causing more sickness, more pain, more suffering, right now, than is influenza. While it is imperative that all possible measures be taken to combat the influen 2& epidemic, the greater scourge of tuberculosis should not be overlooked. The epidemic of influenza is serious in its effects, but in itself influenza is not deadly. It is pneumonia and tuberculosis following an attack or influenza that be comes really dangerous to life. Unless care be taken the presntinfluen za epidemic may be expected to be followed by a greatly increased death rate from tuberculosis: 'Any disease affecting the respiratory tract, such as Spanish influenza, has a tendency to 'light up' any tuberculosis in fection tnat might have been lying dor mant Any person who fails to recover promptly from an attack of Spanish influ enza should be very carefnl. If suchi person should find a little rise in tem perature, 99 or above, in the afternoon, with a subnormal temperature, 98 or be low, in the morning, such person should suspect tuberculosis, and should at once have a thorough examination of the lungs by the family physician, or a specialist" Liberty Loan Slogans. George T. Wilson, writing from quarantine, Navy Yard, S. C, Box 64, encloses the following Liberty Loan slogans: Wear your old clothes and buy Liberty Bonds. - Liberty Bonds or German bondage. "Come across" or the Kaiser will. The soldier gives; you must lend. Liberty Bonds or German taxes. , Buy over here to win over there. It's billions for defense or billions for indemnity. For Foch and freedom; buy Bonds. A bond slacker is the Kaiser's backer. A man who won't lend is the Kaiser's friend. The more bonds you buy the fewer boys will die. Lets all get on the Bond wagon. Be one of the millions to lend the bil lions. Din up the coin and bury the Hun. Buy Bonds before it's verboten. Idle dollars are Pro-German. Put the "Pay" into Patrotism. Bonds speak louder than words. If you can't fight your money can. Freemen buy bonds, slaves wear them. Victorian Community Club. The Victorian Community Club met Oct 1, 1918, with Mrs. Geo. Terry. Most of the members were present and several visitors, some being absent prevented by sickness. Of course the excuse had to be something bad to keep us at home when it was whispered that Mr. W. N. Everett was going to be with us. Mr. Everett's time being limited we gave him the floor first He made a good, sensible talk on Food Conservation which if put into practice will be profitable to us in more ways than one. He told us what our duty was for the next year. We enjoyed having him with us very much. Hope to have him again soon. We then laid plans for our fairs, etc. There was a good collection of peach pits and hick orynut shells for Uncle Sam. Our meet ing adjourned to meet with Mrs. C. W. Gibson, Oct 15th. Mrs. Geo. G. Terry. P. S. Since writing the above it has been announced that the fairs will be postponed, so will the next club meeting on account of the epidemic prevailing. 3h Cows for Sale.
