Obituary John Diggt
(Contributed)
We regret to announce that
Saturday May 20th, 1922 the
grim reaper, Death, visited Cor
dova, and claimed brother John
Diggs and bore his spirit to its
final resting place in the flower
field of the better country.
Brother Diggs was born in
Anson county, N. C, about Nov.
7th, 1851. He was married m
Jan. 1871 to Miss Loretta Neal,
of Anson county, and she served
him until his death. He leaves a
wife and 5 children, fourteen
grandchildren and many friends
to mourn his departure.
His remains were laid to rest
in Zion Cemetery Sunday after
noon. A large congregation at
tended the funeral service, which
was conducted by the Rev. dark
of the M. E. church, of which
Brother Diggs has been a mem
ber for the last twenty-two years.
I have seen a great deal of the
life of Brother Diggs, and I feel
safe in saying that he was true
and devoted to every good work
that lay before him, and the only
foundation on which I have to
base my statements is the life
that he lived while here on earth
He has gone from our presence
and we will no more hear his
voice in the church, but he has
left an influence behind that will
roll forward through the ages
and grow stronger and brighter.
We should not think of him,
other than that he has finished
his course here in this trouble
some world, and has gone to be
with his Lord. Earth to earth,
ashes to ashes, dust to dust, is
only spoken over the body, when
consigned to the house appointed
for all living.
He will return to his loved
ones no more, but they can go to
him; share his pleasures, emulate
his sympathies, and compete
with him in the path of endless
development.
We should not be grieved nor
sad because brother Diggs has
gone to his long, long resting
place where he is free from sor
row, from pain and everything
that makes sad and brings tears.
But the thing for us to do is to
set our affections on things above,
and look to Jesus who will guide
us to the beautiful home of the
blest.
And now, may God in his
goodness and mercy be with ifce
family and loved ones in tms
sad bereavement. May Heaven's
richest blessings abide with them
and may the life that brother
Diggs lived and the influence he
has left behind, be a help and
guide to them in leading themtto
the better land.
Now I am sure if we live the
life as Christ has laid before us.
we will have nothing to fear.
Then when the last scene of all
comes, and death takes us in its
embrace, and our body is laid
awav in the cold ground, our
spirit will glide to a never-ending
rest, to ever be with the Lord.
'The stream is calmest when it
nearsthe tide,
And flowers are sweetest at eventide.
And birds most musical at close of day.
And saints divinest when they pass
away."
By a friend, Sandy D. Hyatt
To Brother John W. Diggs.
