But, the striped and spotted : cucum ber beetles will h&ve all ?the 'if east' if JVIr. Gardner doesn't dust. . To drive away or, repel beetles, dust with a mixture of : ' i One pound calcium arsenate j Five pounds wheat flour Ten pound air-slacked lime. ? To kill these pests and also repel others not in. the garden at Jthe time, apply nicotine dust. For home gar dens, 12 1-2 pounds of nicotine dust may be made as follows: : Hydrate lime 12 lbs. 40 per cent nicotine sulfate & lbs. Apply at once, if not already done, and again ,in two or three weeks if the beetles become troublesome.. i S;L HOW tO Apply For the repellent, the dust may be shaken from a muslin sack, or blown from a bellows duster. The nicotine dust should be ap plied from a bellows duster. , One of the best for this use is a knap sack bellows duster, with a large fun nel or hood at the nozzle end of the hose. This funnel or hood should be large - enough at the flare to cover a cucumber or melon hill completely. It should also have two or three small holes near the hose attachment, so that the upward draught will be created to Suck thef dust ' upward from the ground to the under side of the leaves. When applying nicotine dust, one should walk quietly, along the row and disturb the beetles as' little as possible, for they are quite' timid. The, dust must cover the" beetle tobe most effective. . - . Bordeaux mixture (4-4-50),- with three pounds of lead arsenate. - in 50 gallon .mav - be sprayed to con trol both beetll and disease."'
