ROCKINGHAM POSTDISPATCH, RICHMOND COUNTY. N. C. PAGE ELEVEN NEW STUDEBAKER INROCKINGHAM At the L. & G. Motors. Beautiful New Model. A 4 WEDNESDA, JUNE 19, 1946 mm The L. & G. Motors here, on Hancock street, near the over head bridge, now has on display a beautiful new Studebaker the long-awaited 1947 model. And Charlie and Jim Gillis, Irving Long and the other fel lows associated with this hustl ing young motor firm, are all smiles over their new baby proud papas, all of them for this new Studebaker. In speaking of this 1947 model Studebaker, Charlie Gillis has this to say, "This car could not have been built before the war. Progress in manufacturing and engineer ing has given us greater safety, j greater comfort and greater op erating efficiency than our pre- war knowledge could have made ' possible.. It is not only the first ; genuine postwar automobile, j but an automobile that sets the style for the entire industry, j "We feel that this new Stude- baker is the most important contribution to motoring in two decades. Our opinion has been, strengthened by the model's re ception in public and private , previews. At the recent Gold- 1 en Jubilee Celebration of the ; automobile in Detroit these cars j were the center of attraction. They drew large curb-side crowds wherever they parked. Drivers were besieged by ques tions. Unbiased newspaper "writers have termed it 'the hot test thing on wheels.' They re port 'Studebaker has taken the lead.' " Most apparent result of an engineering program that touch ed virtually every part of the chassis and body is the blended unity of the new Studebaker design. Fenders have been ab sorbed into the body. A judici ous application of curved glass has created a "flow" of line that commands immediate admira tion. . -Although smartness has been achieved by the design, refine ments afford as well many prac tical advantages. By extending passenger compartments into the former fender areas, inter ior room has been appreciably increased. Exceptional visibil ity is another highspot. Wind shields and windows have been broadened. Wind resistance is lower, adding to top speeds. The lower body (measuring tmly fractionally over five feet in height) has been produced without any sacrifice in head Toom by moving the passenger compartment forward. Passen gers now ride well ahead of the Tear axle in a zone where road irregularities are least felt. Lowering the car floor, accom panied by a scientific redistribu tion of chassis weight, increases driving and riding ease. The center of gravity is lower. Cars seemingly "hug" the highway, a point that is readily evident on curves. A further improvement in safety is effected by Studebak er's new self-adjusting brakes. An important "first" in trans portation, the mechanism as sures quick, firm stops through out the life of the brake lining. The secret lies in a device that automatically moves trie brake shoe outward in steps of .005 of an inch as the lining wears. Non-glare, black light instru ment panel illumination, origi nally developed for fighter air craft; stronger, box-section frames ; broader wheel rims and a more secure method of locking bodies and chassis are other safety features. Also listed among chassis advances is a re-engineered front wheel plan ar suspension in which spring ends are "floated" in rubber. Body details imparts an at mosphere of luxury and reflects a studious regard for comfort and convenience. The spaci ousness of the richly tailored interiors is impressive. Door "handles are of a new pull-to type. A modishly trimmed ins trument panel sets off jumbo sized dials. A pistol grip park ing brake is located in the cen ter of the dash. Seats are ful ly adjustable. Convertibles, two and tour door sedans, business coupes and a fresh treatment of the five-passenger coupe, which has Teen acclaimed as the most pro gressive step in automotive styl- .3 y .
