On Tuesday last Bill Redd went into Mr. Alex. Taking an other from the Bhow case Mr. Morrisey remarked, "Well, here's one that is not too hard ." at the same time snapping it. An explosion and an ear-piercing cry, "Oli, Lordy, I'se shot,", caused Moiisey to turn as wb;te Hamlet's ghost, and to quake and tremble worse than did Beltshazzer of old, but an ex amination showed the wound to be noth ing serious, though quite painful. The ball entered his right cheek, at the cor ner ot the mouth and came out under the ear. It w is purely accidental. It is useless to moralize on snapping "un loaded" pistols; people won't learn. CflebraiittB at. Spring Wlh Me. Editos ;Tbe Richmond Temper ance and Literary Society celebrated its 29th anniversary tq-day. (26th Sept Twenty-nine years ago this community was quite intemperate. Cider drinking was as common as fodder pulling And the two went hand in hand, with the odds in favor of the cider drinking. When ihejider "played out'' something strongi er was resorted to, and thus matters went from bad to worse until two young men in the neighborhood, seeing the danger ahead, talked the matter over and resolved to organize a Tetn'perance Society. The formation of a Literary So ciety had been talked of previous to this; and these young' men suggested that Temperance be added. Hence the organization of the Richmond Temper ance and Literary Society. Those two youg men were Neill D. Johnson, who died in the late war but who will live in the hearts of this people while temper ance has a friend, and Daniel W. Living-., ston, who still lives to see. the wonderful results of "the seed sown twenty-nine years ago! Pardon me, Mr. Editor, for taking so much of your valuable space in giving this brief sketch of the forma tion of our Society. -) Well, we met to-day to celebrate the 29th birthday of our grand old Society, and a gala day it was. U He weather all that could be desired. By 1 1 o'clock, the hour for exercises t commence, a large crowd had gathered in the church (the hall being too small to hold the crowd) to hear the address of Mr. Chas. W. Tillett, ode of the speakers of the occasion. 1 1 or an hour he entertained and delighted his audience with one ot the strongest speeches to which it haa ever been the pleasure of this scribe to listen. He handled the subject of tem perance so manfully, and made such bold and fearless attacks against the great evil, intemperance, that he completely won the admiration -of all who heard him. He then took up the subject of Literature and showed the great advan tages ottered by this feature of our So ciety. Mr. Tillett made many warm friends in this section. After the speech of Mr. Tillett the au dience' adjourned to the grove where a sumptuous dinner wa3 spread, of which all partook, and many baskets of frag ments were taken up. Rev. Mr. May, who was expected to be present, was detained by sickness and sent as his sub stitute Rev. E. D. Cameron, of Laurin burg, who spoke in the afternoon. Mr. Cameron didn't know till this morning that he would be here to-day and of course tas remarks were extemporan eous, but he proved himself equal to the. occasion and made a stirring and telling speech. At the close of Mr. Cameron's speech the members repaired to the hall, where four new members were received. Thus ended one of the most pleasant anni ver8arios of our Society, and Tye trust and believe that lasting good was done. We enter upon our 30th year with re newed energy and bright prospects.
