'-. Washington, Deo29, 1885;
.1' Christmas day was celebrated 1
the usual way at the Capital. '"The
Government Departments werVclqs
ed and 'the clerks freed. There were
whole forests of Christmas trees for
the little folks, and charity was busy
distributing good things and pretty
things , to the ppor. The ; turkey
found its way everywhere from hum
ble hom es'to the palaces pf the rich j
There were decorations of evergreen,
illuminations,' and other outward
recognitions of the season which'per
haps made everybody, who could
feel harmy a little happier than
usual. ' - ' ' - ": :-.v- . .' ..- ,
The inmates of the Soldiers' Home,
Reform Schools, Ilospitalsand similar-institutions
were supplied with
the: regulation Christmas dinner of
turkej', celery j cranberry sauce and
mince, pie, given in many instances'
by the hand of charity. The pro
prietor of Willard's hotel alone fuK
nished Christmas turkey or chicken
to fiye hundred: pco families.
Many churches were opened .on
Christmas day, and appropriate ser
vices, with elaborate musical prpv
gram mes, were listened to by large
audiences. - The way in which these
religious celebrations' were attended-
attested the fact that in this respect,
at least, Christmas docs not change
with time. .
Quite a number of Senators and
Representatives went to their homes
to spend, the holidays. A" few ac:
cepted an invitation by the xBalti
timore & Ohio lines for a trip of a
week with their families to .New Or
leans, and not a few members of the
House remained ta .WashihgtoiJ.J,to

The - undignified manner in which
some members proceed in thei ap
plication for these places cannot be
too severely remarked upon. .;They
