Sha Whipped Her Lover. - - ' Pretty Emelia Revere an eighf-n-year-old German maiden, 'who lives at. Hamburg' avenue and Leon ard street. Williamsbure. is the her- oine nf a horse-whiping episode that took place yesterday morning. Emelia lookedJor a time with fond ness upon Gustavo Zoman, an ener getic young man of twenty-seven, who resides at No. 114 Fourth Aven tie, tthis city. Gustavo paid sedul ous court to the fair Williamsburg belle' and. hoped soon to make her Mrs. Zouaan.; But young hearts are changeable, and pretty Emelia hap pened to meet another love and de cided to cast Gustavo off. Just how it happened Gustave could not telL For days he linger ed around the Revere household, undecided what course he should pursue. Finally he decided to 'persist in his suit, and yesterday morning he called upon the fair Emelia with the request that he again be taken into her good graces. Gustave had already given Emelia the ring which would have joined them. As he mounted the steps that led to her house he bitterly thought of that fact He saw Emelia. however, and jwith an utterly bitterness of yearn ing reminded her of her promise to marry him, and that the guest had already been invited for the mar riage feast. Emelia listened, then she told .him that her mind had already been made up. Gustave could never be hers, as she loved another better. He would forever be her dear, dear brother, but Gustave stormed, then lie swore, and finally Emelia got angry. She spurned his love with a vehemence that astonished him, and finally ordered him peremptor ily from her presence. Gustave refused. Emelia left the jroom a moment, then returned with a murderous looking horse whip. With little ceremony she raised it, then brought it down, . not once or twice, but a dozen times on the hitherto devoted head of Gustave. " " .His agonizing cries brought a crowd to the scene, but Gustave had -few friends among the number. Meanwhile the girl plied the horse ' whip vigorously, and bleeding pro fusely, Gustave made his escape. lie now contemplates taking out a warrant for the arrest of Emelia on a charge of assault' He is not yet satisfied, and swears that the end is "not reached. He will pursue his rival to the ends of lhe earth, if nec essary, and compel hiin to relinquish all claims to the lady; then Gustave's triumph will be complete. New York Star. A Sound Legal Opinion. It is natural that he should Tall into the rut of the mon opoly aristocrats; that he should think the cheapest labor the best, and believe the Chinese just as good as the Irish, But while intelligent and self-respecting American workmen may, in the generosity of their hearts, feel more of indifference that of hatred toward such a man, they are not at all likely to vote to make him President and give him a chance to devise another Burlingame treaty to swamp American labor under the flood of Asiatic competition. And so it goes. What am I to do? I have tried all sorts of business, but nothing seems to suit." The only thing for such a person to do, is to make a choice of some business and stick to it, or else have his life a perpetual failure. The pre tense that he cannot continue at any kind of business is sheer nonsense. He is simply unwilling to sacri fice his own selfish inclinations. He does not like work of any kind. He amuses himself with a new occupa tion while the novelty lasts, but when that Is worn off. and the busi ness becomes work and not amuse ment, he gives it up. That is the plain truth of the matter. There are plenty of such . people, and they usually end their days in poverty. A New Orleans Merchant Mr. A. K. Seago writes: Send me a dozen bottles Huckleberry Cordial for some afflicted children at the or phans' home. Have used it with so much success in my family, know what it will do. HAPPINESS AND CONTENTMENT surely cannot go hand in hand if we look on the dark side of every little obstacle. Nothing will so darken life and make it a burden as Dyspepsia.
