Hev. Nathaniel W.Conkling, D.D., & JTorthcra man who recently spent eoin'e time at Ashevllle, N. C., thus mtes to the New YorK Observer his observations and impressions of the raountain country of the old North tale: "I spent several days far up among the mountains.. The road went no further. I was after trout, which I found at home in these rapid, clear, cold, splendid mountain streams. Black flies and mosqui toes are pests unknown. I am told that later in the season, rattlesnakes and copperheads abound. The mountains are full of game bears, deer, wolves, wild-cats, wild-turkeys, pheasants, etc. The forests are pri meval. The timber is abundant and valuable: walnut, poplar, white pine, beech, cherry, chestnut, bal eam, etc. Minerals abound through out the whole mountain region. Here are found gold, silver, copper, iron, corundum, marble, and imbed ded in these various minerals valuable gems such as are found nowhere else iu this country. If I were going to raise cattle or sheep, I would go to this mountain region rather than to the far West The '-climate is such that stock can live without shelter summer and winter. Its history since the closing years of the sixteenth century has been full of interest and worth. Here was the scene of the first attempt of the En glish to colonize America. In the following century large numbers of migrants found their way to the 'Carol inas. These new comers were Of the best class of im migrant Scotch, Scotch-Irish, Swiss, Dutch, English. They were Presbyterians, Lutherans, Quakers, Huguenots and Moravians. It was not the soil and the climate alone which acttracted them to the colony, but especially the guarantee of full religious liberty and of exemption from taxation, ex 'cept with consent of the legislature. iSo it came to "pass that these people "were always devoted to liberty and impatient of tyranny. They resisted all attempts to establish the English 'church and collect church rates. It was in 1775 ' that the Scotch-Irish settlers about Charlotte adopted the famous Jiecklenburg resolution, an nulling and vacating "all laws and commissions by authority of king 'and parliament." ' Th us North Carolina was ready for the formal declaration of independ ence, and was the first of all the col 'onies to instruct its delegates to the Continental Congress to vote for it In 1861 this State showed itself averse to the war; sought to avert the conflict : keot its dace in the 'Union until all the surrounding States had seceded : and mined th Confederacy only when there was no , j Alternative left but a choice of sides.
