Its only business sys- j tem consists of the Business Agents of the Sub-AUiauce8 and State Alii- ance. ' I The Farmers' Alliance has no machinery for creating new tner-1 chants, and I would respectfully buzz est to nil .those members who contemplate organizing co-opera tive stores to considr the situation well. The only plan of co-operative stores that has succeeded (of which I have any knowledge) is the Rich dale plan of England. It is only suited to densely populated dis tricts, where opreratiaes are paid in cash at least once a month. A num ber of them were started in this country some years ago, but I do not know of anv now. It raav not be so easy for the stockholders, and particularly those who indorse for it, to retire from it in as good hu mor as when they organized it. Ig undoubtedly caused by .lactic acid in the blood. This acid attacks the fibrous tissues, and causes the pains and aches in the back, shoul ders, knees, ankles, hips, and wrists. Thousands of people have found in Hood's Sarsaparilla a positive cnre for rheumatism. This medicine, by its purifying action, neutralizes the acidity of the blood, and also builds up and strengthens the whole body. The weather-prophet derives his profit from the change in the weather Worth Knowing. Mr. V. H'. Morgan, merchant, Lafce City, Fla., was taken with a severe cold, attended with a distress ing cough and rulTning into Con sumption in its first stages. He tried many so-called popular cough rem edies and steadily grew worse. -Was redilced in flesh, had difficulty in breath frig' aifd was unable to sleep. Finally tried Dr. King's New Dis covery for Consumption and found immediate' Telief, and after using about a lialf dozen boltles found Jiimaolf iv oil nl hie linrl nn return of the disease. No otler remedy can show so grand a record of cures as Dr. King's New Discovery for Con sumption. Guaranteed to do just what is claimed for it. ' Trial bottle free at Dr. W. M. Usually Presidential , years have not been favorable to commercial pros ptrity. .This year is no exception. Railroad receipts are less than in 1887. The number of failures is great, and alarmingly on the in crease. There seems to be a good deal that is Terj rotten in Den mark." The outlook is not all that could be desired. There has been too much over trading. Too man yi people have quit farming to go into merchandising and trading, and without either business capacity or training. There is a continued ad vance in Southern manufactures, but the great farming interest in the South is not satisfactory. In North Carolina there is depression in trade, and because of the condition of the farmers, the true basis of all sab stantial prosperity. There are sec tions whole counties in which bread is scarce and in which the to bacco crop was almost a failure. This too in sections where in past years money has been abundant be cause crops were remunerative. We look for more failures and shall be very thankful if a financial crisis does not occur within the next two years. In the country at large the signs. are not as flattering as one would, desire. The Louisville Courier-Journal says: "But taking railroad stocks and farm produce tbgether, the phen6m enal shrinkage is certainly a stun ning negative of the 'boom aiki we are sorry to say it. Buoyancy is a. missing element in all departments "The action of trade id i the specti- lative form, which Iiets on gains or losses of value has been betting alL around on declines. The fall in pro duce is attritratsd eorrsetly topleth ora in no other staples but corn, while the logical accompaniment of a fall in the corn and cotton Ww changes would be a rise in the Ex change. But then the shrinkage of values has prorated fully with all produce except corn and its porcine products alone. "All we are pointing at is the bus iness temper, as indicated by invest ments prevailing! which is bearish out of time." Prices for food prod nets are wea kerthan they, were a month ago. Corn has declined 8 cents a bushel wheat has declined 12 cents a bush el ; hogs hare dropped from two to three dollars a head, and other things have fallen. Securities have also shrunk. The coming year 1888,. promises to be one of trial and, ta many, of scarcity. VUmingt0r4 Star. 37 E.
