The violent ringing oLthe hellcat the Pee Dee House about 2 o'clock p; m. last Saturday, followed by the cry of fire, caused a rapid and gen eral turn-out of the populace. Smoke was issuing from the windows in the second story, and a bed-room was filled almost to suffocation to thbsie who first entered. v But jro fire could be found. From roof to cellar the search was carried, but to locate the fire seemed impossible. Finally .af ter cutting into the wall in several places it was found in Ihewallbe tween the ceiling, whence, a match had evidently been-carried by the rats and there ignited. It was a nar row escape. Had it occurred in the night it is quite likely we should have had another big fire to chroni cle this week, as the hotel rsjsitdalfcci in a block of old wooden buildings (and the last one in town) which would burn like tinder.
