Hurrah for the Southport & Bris tol Railroad f The Rocket, is off, with his wife, for a week a visit to relatives and friends in Randolph county. J. W. Hinsdale, Esq., Commission er, advertises a valuable tract of land for sale at auction July 30th. It is a part of the Harrington tract. Don't forget the Alliance picnic at Rockdale on the 25th. The Rocket will have a representative there who will be glad to receipt for subscrip- stolen horse and buggy, at once rec ognized them ; and while Harris was detained at the stable he went to the proper authority and had a war rant issued for his arrest. An Enthusiastic Crowd Which Heant v .:. Snsinessr -- ' . , The railroad meeting in Rocking' ham last Friday was not so largely attended as was expected, but it was enthusiastic and composed of solid men who meant business? The meeting was called to order by J. M. Hines. Esq., upon whose motion Mr. R. A. Johnson was made permanent chairman. R. W. Knight was elected secretary upon motion of Mr. D. C. Stanback. By request of the chairman, J. M. Hines ex plained the object of the meeting to be to devise means for getting a railroad through upper Richmond; to get the sense of the people of Richmond county on the project and to see how far and in what manner they were willing to aid the enterprise, etc. A motion prevailed calling upon the secretary of the railroad meet ing held at Little's Mills on the 8th inst. to read some resolutions which were adopted at that meeting. The following are the resolutions : Resolved, 1. That aoDlication be made to the County Commission ers tor a railroad election to author ize the issue of county bonds to the amount of $50,000, to be given to anv railroad corporation that shall make the most satisfactory terms for build ing a road through upper Richmond, said bonds to be issued when work is actually begun. The route of said road to be from Rockingham via Mt. Pleasant, Wm. Parsons, Lit- lies xains, ana 10 maneum or Erie Mills, Montgomery county, so as to carry, the road as nearly through the the centre of the county as practicable. 2. That election petitions be is sued at once to carry out the above. 3. That a working committee from each township in the upper end be appointed to go to work with an energy to carry the election to a successful issue 4. Wall, Esq., on Tuesday morning informs ua of his safe arrival in London. He says the International Sunday-school Convention is "immense," represent atives being therefrom all parts of the world. We have an interesting letter for next week's Rocket. Mr. J. R. Arrowood informs us that we were in error last week in stating that his wife had eloped with W. N. Gibson. He says she has merely gone on a visit to some of her relatives. We gave the re port as we heard it and believed it to be true. But as it was not, we are sorry to have published it Hon. Harry Tracy, national lect urer of the Farmers' Alliance, will peak in Rockingham next Satur day, the 20th. We are requested to extend a cordial invitation to the public and to urge the farmers gen erally to attend, as Mr. lracy will have something to say to interest and instruct them. Editor of the Rocxet. The-midsummer sun has not been obscured by the rain clouds this week until last eve, and we have experienced ; about the hottest weather of the season. On account of; the heavy rains last week farm I work was very much retarded, and General Green had put in his un welcome appearance in most of the crops, but the sturdy farmers armed all their available forces with hoes, and some to the rear with plows, and have about subdued the foe. While some lose others gain. It is narrated that one farmer, in the Mountain Creek section, has much more wheat now than he had before the floods of last week. Mrs. H. C. Wall and family are guests at the Springs now, having reached here on the 11th inst; Miss Mollis E. Smith, of this com munity, is visiting her sister, Mrs. Covington, of Brightsville," Marlbo ro County, S. C. Mrs. Covington has been sick, but we are glad to report her condition much better. Report says that Troy is sure of a railroad. Propositions have been submitted and accepted for the ex tension of the Page railroad, from Westend to that place. What are the people of northern Richmond doing about a road? The Page railroad will commode some of this county but it will not give our peo pie the long felt necessity a rail road in their midst. It is time for the Richmondites to shake off their shackles of lethargy, and have a road through this county. Stevens, a representative of the Southport & Bristol railroad, was present and made some very encouraging statements in regard to bis road. He dwelt first upon the many advantages, both to the road and to the country through which it would pass, of the construction of 1st grade, Nonnie I. Spivey. 2nd grade, Lena Loflin, Oscar J.
