Both acts were retro grade steps "back into (he regions-of iraorance. The State seemed kihamed of the honors that had crowned her as having been tne nrs State in the Union to have author ized and carried out a geological survey. The very temerity of the measure alarmed her economical courage, and its very brilliancy starliltfd her modesty. So -. with the Fish Commission, which rich' with the promises of wealth to one section of the State, and of indi rect benefit to every part of it, was abolished because it had not made shad to run up the sparkling waters beyond the Blue Ridge, or herring ib -flutter in the mill ponds of the interior. We wait, with the Messenger, for the day when "progressive men of North Carolina shall once more go into the legislature ;" men who look beyond such legislation as will make their' own successors; men Who can look beyond their own counties -or sections ; men who can comprehend North Carolina as a whole, andf be able to balance, with road reach of intelligence and gen erosity, the diverse, sometimes an . tagonistic, claims and interest of the whole' ' Then Business Booming, probably no one thing has caused such, 'a 'general revival of trade at Dr. W. Fowlkes & Co Labor in EnfflancL None of the Henublican organs have undertaken to explain why,"if he present strike of the-qockmen in. London is due to Free Trade, the strike of the 'longshoremen in this city was riot due to Protection.' One of these organs has the grace to admit that "strikes occur under Free Trade and Protection alike." But it maintains that the low wageB which are the occasion of the present trouble in London are "connected with the general economic condi tions of England under Free Trade." Will it venture to deny that far more serious labor troubles, culmi nating in bread riots, occurred in England when that country had "Protection?'' If the organ will be wholly candid it will continue its admission? to the point of stating the whole truthT-namely, that the wage question in England is gov erned by the "general economic con ditions" of that country, with very little relation to its revenue system ; that wages in England are much higher than in any protected conn- n i-i try in Europe, and that the condi tion of her working people is so generally good that Minister Lin coln recently classed them with those of America as Athe most favor ed in the world." Is such an exhibition of candor too much to expect frQrh a Protec tion organ ? The "general economic condition" of England, which yields low wages for dockmen and common laborers, is created by the density of popula tion (280 to the sq'uare mile, against 14 in the United States) and by the other features of an old and aristo cratic form of government and land tenure. If Free Trade has not bene fited England immensely, why is there no party there to urge a re turn to Protection ? N. Y. World. ADVICE TO MOTHERS. Mrs. Winslow's Soothing Syrup should always be used when children are cutting teeth. It relieves the little sufferer at once; it produces natural, quiet sleep by relieving the child from pain, and the little cherub awakes as "bright as a button." It is verv pleasant to the taste. It soothes the child, softens the gums, allays all pain, relieves wind colic, regulates the bowels, and is the best known remedy lor diar rhoea, whether arising irom teethinc or other causes. Twenty-five cents a bottle. The Polkton News, in its last issue, has the following : L. J. Kiker says he has 7 acres of cotton, if no disaster, that will make 3,000 pound seed cotton to the acre. We like to hear such talk from so reliable a hard working man as iriend Jackson. Jackson didn t tell us this but his neighbors did. Such reports are encouraging this year. John Winfield says he has the best crop he ever had in his life, and our old friend oraokms Billy has a far better crop than last year. The cotton in his low grounds is splendidly fruited. He will make i more than last year. We begin to thiik if frost stays off till November, we may have an average crop. J. H. Thomas (Cribs' Creek) has the best crop he ever had. Jim Thomas is a farmer, few better. He lives at home, hospitable and energetic. We have few better citizens than Jim Thomas and rejoice in his success, especially this year of generally poor crops. THE REMARKABLE CURES which have been effected by Hood's Sar- saparilla are sufficient proof that tjiis med icine does possess peculiar curative power. In the severest cases of scrofula or salt rheum, when other preparations had been powerless, the use of Hood's Sarsaparilla has brought about the happiest results. the case of Miss Sarah C. Whittier, of I Lowell, Mass., who suffered terribly from scrofulous sores ; that of Charles A. Rob erts, of East Wilson, N. Y., who had tbir- een abscesses on his face and neck ; that of Willie Duff, of Walpole, Mass., who had hip disease and scrofula so bad that phys icians said he could not recover, are a few of the many instances" in which wonderful cures are effected by this redicine. The people of Union county held. meeting at Monroe on Tuesday last to express their feeling of indig nation at the lynching ol Frank Stack, by a mob of masked men at Morganton, September 10th. The victim of this outrage was a citizen of that county, and known as a worthy nd highly respected man, who cheerfully submitted to arrest by reason of the implied promise of tair and impartial trial, unon which he averred he could fully es tablish his innocence. These facts aroused an intense feelins at the ferrible crime committed, which gave expression in the resolutions passed, which we print elsewhere.
