It is go ing a step too far when they are ex pected to answer as to having phys ical deformities they are trying to conceal, or as to being divorced, or as to having given birth to children, or as to being defective in their men tal faculties. Such questions as these are highly impertinent and improper; yet they are only a few of the questions that the census takers are required to ask on their rounds. There is no constitutional warrant for any questions other than those that relate to the number of the peo ple. One can be forced to answer all questions asked for this purpose. But we have the authority of some of the most eminent constitutional lawyers of the country for the state ment that information -on other points is entirely optional, and may be given or withheld as one chooses.
