TeStee speeches. arose cha a n. negro is 'a ringing epp Out &9 .that followed Loge called Rne of the eabje brethren "a liar !" AftrTttii hoar or two of disgraceful wrangling A. E. Holton, white, was elected chairman and John C. Dan cy, colored, secretary. The convention then adjourned until &3Q P.m. When it was called to order a pjatform was adopted J after which the following nomina tions were made For Chief Justice of the Supreme Court ; Chas. Price. For Associate Justice of the Su preme Court: VV. T. Faircloth. 1 For Superior Court Judges : Second District F. D. Winston, of Bertie. Fourth District O. J. Spears, of Harnett. Fifth Piatrict-r-W. P. Bynum, Jr., of Guilford. Eighth District A. L. Coble, of Iredell. Tenth Districttr-J, H. Bowman, of Mitchell. J. B. Eaves was re-elected Ghaii- man of the State Executive Com nuttee. The speeches made at the Repub lican State Convention last week, particularly those of Virgil S. Lusk and Marshall L. Mott, were very bit ter. The best people of the State were roundly cursed and abused. The Force bill was enthusiastically endorsed. Federal war-ships and United States bayonets at North Car olina ballot boxes were rolled by the speakers as sweet morsels under the tongue. We can easily see what these fel lows are after. That is as plain as the nose on one's face. They want the State turned over to the Repub licans. They want the offices for themselves and their friends. But the thing that puzzles us is how in the world do they propose to make the people think the condition of affairs would be improved by put ting them in power? The State offices, and the county Offices in a majority of the counties, are at present filled by honest and efficient Democrats. Are these good, capable rnen tobe turned out and political tricksters given their places? We rather opine it will take more powerful reasons to bring this about than vituperation from foul- mouthed scalawags. Have our people forgotten the dark days when our State wag in the handa pf the Republicans? No; and they never will forget them. The memory of the years from 1867 o 1877 will not permit them ever to allow the Radicals to control things in North Carolina again. Mott and Lusk and their kind may howl and curse and swear until they get .as black in the face as the negroes they hob-nob with, but it will do no good. In 1876 the good people of the State broke the shack les of Radicalism, and their determi nation is invincible never again to submit to Radical rule. The platform adopted renews its faith and allegiance to the Repub lican party," endorses Harrison's ad ministration as "wise, just and pa triotic deplores the fact that the Senate refused to pass the Blair bill, and recommends the enactment of some such measure. When that is done they re flect upon labor and profits, and their countenances wear a grin as wearv. vacant, sardonic and hope lessly ragged as the empty hull left upon the stalks. Still tnere is some thing heroic in the farmer, Hope, gentle goddess, is always his attend ant Deity, and now poinis racuanuy to the "second picking." Aa the green bolls swell, burst and disclose the snowy lint again faces gotten to smiles, brighten with pleasure and even overflow with laughter. Vis ions of new winter clothes flit across the mentalities of man, woman and child. Into such small space is hu man happiness sometimes crowded ! Heavily Jaqen wagons are passing, with accompanying walkers and riders. One is reminded of Jugger nautic cars, with the attendant wor shippers, as ICing Cotton goes to market in his jute and iron regalia, only some of the devotees, instead ol following the Idol on foot, are found behind desk and counter and per form their acts of devotion without falling down "worth a cent." On the contrary, they rise to the highest limit when the poor laborer proceeds to outlay a portion of his hard earn ings in something nice for "Bud," "Sis," or the "old woman." Like the eels, "he is used to it," and goes again and again, as the moth to the light. Potato crops are fine, cider plen tiful, and health improving, which is all the news in these parts at the present writing. M. We have not the space to do more, though we should like to lay the full proceed ings before our readers. They need no embellishment or comment to disgust every lover of law and order and good government. V. S. Lusk made a speech in which he declared in favor of the Force bill, and said ; -Now, they say, if that law passes there will be fighting and bloodshed ! If so, bring out your army and we'll meet you half way. Of course that was the ranting of a fool, but it is about the tenor of all the speeches made at the Republi can State Convention. The Deonle will utterly repudiate the whole crew at the ballot box in November. A. Wright & Bio., Rockingham, N. C. Bucklen's Arnica Salve. The Republicans held their State convention in Raleigh on Thursday of last week, and from the reports we have read, it was composed al most exclusively of revenue officers, office holders and negroes the latter largely predominating. The con vention was cabled to order by J. B. 3Savdfc, chairman of the State Exec active CommUte 'who then called upon "Hon. E. E. Smith, colored," to act us temporary chairman, who gracefully accepted the honor. The convention had not proceed ed far before a dispute arose between a revenue officer and a negro, which caused a great uproar and much con fusion. In the melee the chairman pounded so vigorously far order that he "broke his gavel and it rolled to he floor. When order was some- wnat restored Jeter Pritchard, deputy revenue collector, harangued the convention for a while, eliciting lusty applause by his denunciations of q Democratic party and his un- qualified, endorsement of the Force Bill. He said that the "death-knel pf Vance and all other bourbons had been sounded by the farmers,1' and that "capacity, and capacity alone, would hereafter be considered.' niaWs color would make no. differ ence whatever' Other speakers followed in about the. same strain, same white ami $ote colored.
