On rour paper and tou can see ex actly how jou stand with us, and if it is inconvenient for tou to call and settle. send the amount due It mail,' and see that tou keep the date on your label always ahead. Yours Truly, The Axglo Naxoji Co. ' Strange how folks will state a tbiDsr exactly opposite some times. For instance, the Rich mond Times, congratulating the country on the gold standard measure now being railroaded through Congress, says that it gives notice to the world that we intend to pay our obliga tions accof ding to the contract, when the one aim and end of the aforesaid measure is to pro vide for the payment of our ob ligations entirely contrary to the terms stipulated in the contract. And it will not give any honest mau any better opinion of our honesty because the measure is in the interest of our creditors. It is none the less robbery because the people are robbed for tho benefit of our boud holders than it would be icthe bond-holders were rob bed for the benefit of the peo ple. Tli is bill declares' that every government obligation shall be payable iu gold. This government has never in all its A. A nisiory written a contract pay able in gold. The great bulk of our public debt, created in the 60s, was subject to be paid in a depreciated paper currency. After the war the bondholders had a bill passed making them payable in "coin." Now they are made to read payable in "gold coin." Is that according to contract? It is the greatest robbery of modern times. We need not go back to war times to get an idea of its immensity. Take a single bond issue under Cleveland's last administration. He did not have authority to sell bonds payable in gold. In a special message to Congress he asked that the authority to sell gold bonds be gieeu him, giving as his reason that he could sell them at a higher price if to be paid in gold than if to be paid iu "coin" as the law provided. Congress refused. He sold the bond3 for SlG.000,000 less than they would luvo brought if made payable in gM. Now the Republicans 111 ike them payable in gold only, which is a clear robbery of $16,000,000 on this one bond issue, and that a recent one. What will it amount to on the entire public debt? The Republican party is perhaps suffering some remorse of conscience because it depre ciated one of the metals in which our obligations are pay able, and o'erleaps itself m this drastic remedy. They are giving a new meaning to Mr. Bryan's cross of gold. Pritchard wants the Senate to declare that if we adopt the amendment we won't have a "Republican" government in this State. That's "surplusage," . Senator. We haveu't got that " now (the Lord be praised for his mercies) outside the jurisdic tion of the Supreme court, and e propose to revise that at the earliest opportunity. - "Vance won the lcve of his , people and the respect and es- teem of his colleagues by de . fending the honor and integeity -" of bis people in the forum of the Senate, Pritchard succeed ; .ed him there as the - accredit. - ed representative of this-State, and instHaa,ocaisiri his-Vt5ice in our def ensehe asks that body to oiler- insult to bis -people.' . . what a contrast!
