The Woman' Missionary Society of the North Carolina Conference Holds its Next Annual Session in Rockingham. The Woman's Missionary Soci ety of the Nortb Carolina Con ference held its annual meeting in Raleigh last week, and selected Rockingham as the place for hol ding their next annual meeting.' It will bring a notable gathering of noble women, leaders in good works, to our town from all parts for him. 1 Our register of deeds issued license yesterday for the marriage of Mr. Frank II. Moore, a travel ing salesman, of Raleigh, and Miss Pearl Cuthbert, a young, lady of Savannah, who has been visiting friends in Hamlet. The marriage will occur this morning at 7 o'clock, in Hamlet. Pardons attended the annual gathering of bankers at Saannah, last week, and was elec ted vice-president of the North Carolina Bankers' Association. Miss Minnie V. Matthews left Tuesday morning for McCall, S. C. where she will spend a few d.iys, and then she will return to her home in North East, Md. Mr. Charlie W. Jenkins and Miss Annie Kelley were united in mar-ri-ige at the Methodist parsonage l-t Sunday morning by Rev.F.M. Shambutger. They are both of Pee DeeXoa. Prof. Edwin A. Armistead has beeu elected assistant principal of the graded schools at Wilson, N C. He has decided to accept the position and to decline the position of principal of our school here, to which he was recently re-elected He is a bright young man, with thorough preparation for his work, and will be given up here with very general regret. The delinting plant in the tex tile building near Midway came very near being destroyed by fire last Thurbday. It caught in the lint room and had made considerable headway before it was discovered, but the equipment for fighting the fire was so perfect that it was soon put out, notwithstanding it is a wood building. , We have a letter from Prof. Hill, who is attending summer school at Knoxville, Tenn. (in stead of Nashville, as given last week). This is the first session of a great summer school for teach ers fqr the South, which is intended to be the equal of any in the North. Men of wealth have endowed it with ample wealth to secure the very highest talent, and to place the cost to teachers who attend at nominal sum. They expected about 500 teachers to attend the first session, but when it opened up last week there were 1,500 pres ent. Watsons, i i Death of Augustus B. Shaw. It is with feeling9 of unusual sadness thut we chronicle the death of Mr. Augustus B. Shaw, which occurred at K o'clock Tuesday morning, in the hospital in Rich mond, where he had gone for treat ment a few days before. He had mproved a good deal while there, apparently, and his condition was not thought to be alarming, even an nour Dei ore me ena came, which was due to an attack of heart failure. It will be a comfort o his friends to learn that he met he inevitable with entire com posure and confidence. His remains were brought to lockingham Tuesday night, ac- compained by his father, Maj. John D. Shaw, who was with him n his illness. The announcement of his death was received here with manv ex pressions of, regret by those who had known him intimately. He had the endowments which make strong frieudships-br;ght intellect, generous, open-hearted, sincere. He was about 35 years of age, and the la6t ten or "twelve years were spent at Laurinburg, in merchan dising and in agriculture. The funeral exercises were held in the Episcopal church Wednes day afternoon, and conducted by Rev. Mr. Osborne, of Cbarlctte. The funeral and burial services were attended by a large number of people, including many citizens of Scotland County, in testimony of the esteem in which he was held. The intetment was made in East side cemelery. The family has our profound sympathy in this bereavement. The annual protracted meeting at Cartledge Creek Baptist church will commence on the 4th Sunday in Tulv at 10 a. m. Two sermons each day.
