A Statement We wish to apologize to our readers and to the author of the baseball article headed "Roanoke Mil's Wins the Pennant" for the way the article was butchered in composition. The article was set-up and proofed correctly, the butchering occurring when the paper was made-up. As it ap peared it fulfilled literally the Scriptural quotation: "the first shall be last and the last shall lie first!" Precautions have been taken against a reoccurrrt.ee of a mishap of this nature in the future and for this we apologize to readers and author. Our policy ot' holding our col umns open to all subscribers is the one generally followed by newspapers. Our desire is to make the columns of the Herald a forum for the discussion of matters affecting the community and if the article sent us for pub lication is signed, we will publish it regardless of w hether or not its contents meet with our ap proval. A controversy conducted Ihi'ou.'h the columns of a news paper i rarelv ever productive of any thine, but unpleasant re sults for the parties involved. A newspaper, howeer, has no riel.t to rei'u -e publication of an item unle -; it be libel, indecent, or advertiMU'.r niasipierading un der the guise of news items. To the latter class of items we apply advertising rates. The Sidewalk Question At t ne meeting of the Hoard of Trade of Roanoke Rapids Township held in the Rosemary Schooiliouso on last Monday night, a petition was presented tii the individual members tor the purpose f obtaining contribu tions to build a good sidewalk from Rosemary to Roanoke Rapids. This is a tiling that has long been needed in this community and we sincerely hope that the promoters of the scheme will have no trouble in carrying same through to completion. It will be peculiarly advantageous for Rosemary on account of the school children who have to walk down the Avenue to school, good weath er or had. eight months in the year. Mr. .1. T. Chase has ottered to survey the sidew alk and superin tend the construction of same. When the petition was presented at the Hoard of Trade Monday night it had only been circulated in Roanoke Rapids for a few hoar and a hundred and tw enty dob ii- had been pledged. Mr. 1.. S. Cannon has the peti tion in charge in Rosemary and il is Imped and believed that Rosemary will respond with their half. The construction of a -. I gravel and cinder sidewalk will cost about three hundred dollars. Its ue by the school children alone for one session will be worth that much. The sidewalk will not only provide a dry footing in wet weather, it will keep the children and espec ially the little tots out of the midilie of the Avenue where they are in constant danger of being run down by recklessly driven automobiles. lAery father in Rosemary who has children going to school should give what he can towards the sidewalk and induce others to do likewise. It is impossible fur the sidewalk to be built ex cept by private contributions as tow nship road funds cannot leg ally be used for this purpose. Scored Singing in the Country An Open Paper Policy As stated several times in the past, the Herald holds its columns open at all times to expressions of opinions from its subscribers and patrons. Publication of an article does not at all imply that the writer reflects the sentiments of this paper. When we have occasion to make an expression of opinion we do so in the editorial column?. Far down in the country w here urand opera methods have not yet been applied to church sinii inu. a blessed old minister arose and announced the number of the hymn he desired the con irreaation to sinir.says the Popu lar Magazine. He followed the old custom of "lining out" the hymn. That is, he would read a line in a loud voice and then the congregation would sing it. The first line was as follows: "We praise Thee. 0 God. for Thy power ten thousand strong." The congregation tried the line and was to such a high key that when "ten thousand stnmg" was reached everybody was up in a screech. "I'm afraid that's too high," said the benevolent old man. "too high on the ten thousand strong." His difficulty was solved by an ld fellow who stood up far back in the church and exclaim ed in a nasal voice: ! "All right, then, bring it down to one thousand." Bad Company Mother-Johnny, stop using such dreadful language! Johnny Well, mother. Shake spear uses it. Mother-Then don't play with him.
