House, of Scotland Neck, will have charge of the business there. MAGISTRATE'S COURT John H. Morris to Halifax Superior Court for Cut ting "Red" Kelly John II. Morris, white, a resi lient of Roanoke Rapids for the past six months, was trieil by Morris had heen apprehended by Chief Main I on Thursday night and deposited in the town lock-up for safekeeping. Friday morning revealed a broken jail and a missing prisoner. The luck of the jail had been forced during thp night, evidently by some person from the outside. Morris was located ami arrested in Enfield Friday and brought hack to Roanoke Rapids. Chief put him back in jail, this time providing him with company lest he again wax lonesome. When brought to trial Morris at first objected to Magistrate Brown's trying the case but later waived this objection. He did not deny cutting the little Kelly boy with his pocket knife' but stated he was acting in self defense. This testimony was rebutted by a half dozen wit- bound over to Halifax Superior Court under one hundred dollars bond. Morris stated that he didn't know who broke open the jail. Monday night. Hue to the inclement weather, the attend ance was smaller than usual but the discussions were animated ami covered many possible avenues for making the com niunity more progressive and for advancing the business interests of the town. In the absence of both presi dent and vice president. Dr. T. W. M. hong was elected chair man of the meeting. The quest ion of a satisfactory meat market for the town was discussed and plans for a town market were suggested. No action along these lines was taken. MiyJ- T. Chase reported that the sidewalk between Rosemary and Roanoke Rapids was very nearly completed and stated that the work would he finished as soon as weather conditions per mitted. If the majority present at the meeting next Monday night are in favor of this step, a resolution w ill be address ed to Representative W. L.
