This is the same ex hibit that recently created nation-wide interest at the Health Conference at Jacksonville, Florida, and will be a splendid means of teaching our people many a health lesson first hand. The main facts pertaining to health and disease prevention set forth in this exhibit admit of no argument. They are convinc ing and hard to forget when you have once seen them. Adequate Fire Protection That the town of Roanoke Rapids needs an organized, well trained voluntary tire depart ment goes without saying. We think the truth of this state ment will be admitted by every property-holder in town. How then is the pitifully small attendance at the Monday night tneetinic to be accounted for? This Meeting was called by May or J. T. Chase, all of the mem Ihts of the old tire department vere reipisted to attend and all property holders were invited to be present and co-operate in the work of getting an efficient fire fighting organization started. Twelve citizens of Roanoke Rapids were interested enough, t'i attend. We suppose the majority are satisfied to "let Yr burn." Fully half the people in this town do not know the loca tion of the lire bell: probably do not know that there is such an article in the corporate limits If a tire were to break out in the business district or in a congested residence district on a wi.,dy day, the resulting loss practiced entirely uptm news papers. We never heard of on ? of these men trying the ban .. for a loan without interest, try ing to get merchandise from th stores for nothing, or soliciting his landlady for free board. He will try, however, to defraud th? newspaper out of its advertisin r compensation and make no bone of the matter at all. The pity of it is that so man papers and so many editors fa-' for this free advertising graft and allow these pikers to hav? their way. One of the best signs in pressdom, in our opinion, is the fact that newspaper everywhere are setting their faces more and more against im position of this nature. Genuine news matter is always welcome to our columns. Wheii a friend, a subscriber, or. patron brings us a story w hich has new value, a local item or persons i in which they or their friends are interested, we are glaltoge' it and glad to print it, of course without charge.
