Little towns and villages purest kind of water and that n abundance. The conservative old town of Eden ton is waking up. At a re ent meeting of her city council in ordinance was passed to en force the use of sanitary privies. The ordinance demanded that the orivies be made according to the pecifications recommended by he St-ite Hoard of Health and .hat they be installed before ly-time. A wise ordinance for '.his little town, but if she would nave them in before fly-time, she ,hould be up and doing. Durham proposes to run no risk in regard to her city water supply. She has been using iltered water from the Fno iver but owing to the fact that his river receives drainage from Hillsboro, her plan is to change her source to Flat river. Flat iver is remarkably free from sources of pollution. It all'ords i watershed that will be for the needs of Durham years to come. The new plan calls for ,, ' for l'lll a raw water reservoir of 10 million gal Ions' capacity to be located at the present site of a smaller artificial 'ake at the Country Club. This will serve as an emergency sup ply, a settling reservoir, and will add materially to the beauty of the Country Club. Durham has voted Minds to etfect these ii"ii'v, Mr. Gilbert C. $500,(1(1(1 is the engineer in charge. Morehead City is rapidly push ing forward the work of install ing one of the most complete sewer systems in the State. Ac cording to the engineers in charge, the system is already 40' complete and is expected to be complete by July 1st. Such a sewer system with the abolition of the present privies will make Morehead one of the healthiest little towns in the State. I Washington is another North Carolina town that proposes to have a pure water supply. She has bought the old privately vned plant which furnished the ity water from deep wells near he center of town and which irought the owners one or more aw suits on account of its pollut- 'd water. Perhaps the most mod ern filtration plant in the State ias been installed about a mile i urof town. The city supply now . oines from Tranter's Creek m .tead of from wells in the heart ! town in close proximity to hu uin habitations, privies, sewers, 'tables, and other sources of ' lollution. Washington is alsoin . tailing a rather complete sewer ystem. This in turn will abolish ;. great number of old open pri- ies. Soiithport has recently issued 10.000 londs for the installation ( 1' water works and a sewer sys lem. For her water supply she mposes to sink a suitable nuni- er id' deep wells as there is no iii-faee water available. These reposed plans have just been ; iil.niitted to the State Hoard of tealth. Itis probable that these lans or similar plans with slight Iterations will lie approved by ue Board. There are known to be about welve or uiteeii towns in tne; tate that are actively consider- j iig the installation of water j vorks, sewer systems and sewage j iisposal points, or improvements ! ,n existing water and sewer in- i tallations. : - But an up to date man has no , then when they went to the bot time for ancient history. jtom. MASS MEET ING A FROST Only Seven Citizens Responded to Second Call to Organize a Fire Department for Roanoke Rapids. INSURANCE COMMIS SIONER WILL SEND MAN The second mass meeting called by Mayor J. T. Chase for all property owners and interest ed citizens to get together and decide on proper steps to be taken to organize a tire depart ment for Roanoke Rapids was even more of a frost than was the first meeting. Only seven citizens responded to the call last Monday night, whereas at least twelve were present at the meeting of the week before. Of course with such a small attendance net even a semblance of a meeting was held. We understand that in the fact of the apathy that, exists on this important subject, Mayor Chase does not feel that anything can be done and unless additional interest is manifested no further attempt will be made to get a well trained, volunteer fire de partment for Roanoke Rapids. At the first mass meeting held to difcuss this question, a reso lution was passed asking Mr. S. J. Hounds to communicate with line ;orin lam ma insurance i .... ,i,, ...... ,r ., ,..,., i . ... ' m in auvi mrc n a fln.aAii could not ue secured to come here and stir the people up on this fire denartment ouestion. The result of this step has been that the Insurance Department oilers to send a man here to lecture on the subject and spend several days here giving practic al training in fire fighting. Unless he has somebody to train, however, it will be useless for him to come, and two attempts to create interest in this matter have failed.
