Considering the source from which the article came, we will give it the merest possible notice. It would be gratifying to the edi tor of this paper to reply at length and to mention many ol' the obvious defects of the Ccnv monwealth, its editor, and its ow ner, but in deference to our sub scribers we will be as brief as possible. Another sentiment that causes us to refrain from the retort caustic is that of pity for a news paper once the pride of the county but now a byword and hat we had them and that they a ere adequate for defense pur- oses, what defense would they e for our trade with other na tions? What would it cost us to ie unable to ship a bale of cot on, a bushel of wheat or a nound of meat across the ocean? How could we expect to enforce 'he Monroe doctrine with a sys tem of defense comparable only to that of a porcupine?
