Caraman died on last Friday, April 6, at his home in Roanoke Rapids from cerebral haemorrages. Mr. Car aman was fif ty years of age at the time of his death. He has been a resident of Roanoke Rap ids for three or four years and has a nciee here, Mrs. David Kidd. Mr. Caraman came here Irom Hyde county. He was in Wyche returned Tuesday from a few days visit with friends in Baltimore. Cullom-Finch Monday aftermxm. at 2 o'cl)ck death entered our midst and' claimed, without a moment's notice, one of our oldest and most honored citizens, Mr. David E. Stainback. Mr. Stainback had just return ed from Halifax in an automobile where he went to secure a mar riage license, with a couple that he was to unite in marriage at the terminal Hotel. Just as he step ped upon the hotel porch, he was suddenly attacked and died within a moment of heart failure, before medical assistance could reach him, Dr. Morehead reached his side within a few moments, but the grim Old Reaper had claimed his life before any earthly power could be used to resist him. Mr. Stainback was born in Brunswick county, Virginia, in ls51. He was the fourth son of Wm. and Mary C. Stainback. His mother was Miss Mason, daughter of Nathaniel Mason, of that county. His boyhood days were spent in Brunswick county. . Shortly after he was grown, he went to 1 etersburg, Va., to live, where he lived several years; then moved to Enfield. There he married his first wife, Miss Min nie Bell, daughter of Colonel Bell of that town. Two children were born of that marriage. About 1KS6 he moved with his family to Weldon, where he has resided and made friends up to his death. Abont 1S95 he lost his wife. A few years later he married again to Miss Ella Cheek, daught er of Captain W. T. Cheek, who survives him with five small chil dren, one daughter and four sons. Mr. Stainback has for many years been Associate Editor of the Roanoke News, accepting that position in 1893. He has al so for many years acted secretary to the Board of Town Commis sioners, as Town Registrar and clerk, as collector for the water works, as Justice of the Peace, and represented several large in surance companies. He was often sought by couples coming here to be joined in matrimony and married a great many. He was engaged in this work when death overtook him. Mr. Stainback was a man of sterling character, without guile, Three men from Rosemary have Rone and several more enlist ments there are reporetd. The Peoples Theatre have offered to give ten per cent of the receipu on Tuesday nights to the first ten men enlisting in either the army or navy. The bonus will begin on May 1 and the amount given each week will be deposited in the First National Bank to be distributed later by the Red Cross Association, to the proper parties. All who enlist are urged to register their names I and addresses with Manager Robinson, of the Peoples Theatre, in order that there mav be no confusion or mix-un. The Peonlp Theatre, is doing this to stimu late recruiting and if the patriotic citizens attend the show on Tues day more than other nights the bonuses given will probably amount to quite a resnectabl hgure.
