C, AUGUST 17, 1917 EXAMINATIONS FOR DRAFT GOING ON RAPIDLY Subscription $1.50 a Year in Ail vane With a week of exceptionally prompt and efficient disposition of a lengthy criminal docket, the August term of Halifax County Superior Court commenced the last case on this docket late Thursday afternoon, being that of the State vs Mabry of Scotland Neck for the murder of Taylor, his ten ant farmer, late in July. Of course, the civil calendar yet remains but this is not expected to con sume much time. Many compliments have been paid His Honor, Judge Whidby. of Greenville, for the despatch with which he has handled his court here as well as for the soundness of his decisions. The cases de eded, with the exception of the Mabry murder case, which goes over to Friday, are as follows: Macie Jones, judgement sus pended. Henry OuVoy, assault and bat tery, $25 and cost. Henry Davis, larceny, eighteen months on the county roads. Paul Whitfield, burglary. De fendant submitted to a ple of ii i i seconu uegree burglary, ana re ceived a sentence of fifteen years in the State Prison at hard labor. Matthew Bennett, carrying concealed weaions, nine months on county roads. Richard Smith, carrying con cealed weapons, assault and bat tery, two years on county roads. Sam Bennette, gambling, $10 and costs. Sam Valentine, gambling, $10 and costs. Nick Dempsey, gambling $10 and costs. Nick Daniel, trespass, twelve months on county roads. Parnell Carlisle, assault and battery, $10 and costs. Willie Brown, gambling, $25 and costs. Joe Grant, assault with intent to commit rape, not less than five nor more than ten years in State Prison at hard labor. Mack Hockaday, carrying concealed weapons, $50 and cost Lierly, Garner, Barkley, Hin son, and Baleyjack, Rosemary bovs, all of whom; except Garner, being from fifteen to seventeen years of age, pleaded guilty to gambling. Judgement suspended upon payment of costs. Bill Ransom, gambling, sixty days on county roads. Arrie M. Philips, gambling, $15 and costs. Neil Spruill, carrying concealed weapons, four months on county roads. Sam Ashe, carrying concealed weapons, three months on county roads. Philip Anthony, assault and battery, $25 and costs. Arthur Jones, assault and bat tery, $22 and costs. Alex Brown, carrying conceal ed weapons, $50 and costs. Levy Patterson and Clifton Daniel, gambling, ninety days each on county roads. Hayood Bell, carrying conceal ed weapons, $50 and costs. Willie Miles, arraigned for an alleged attempt to poisin his wife was found not guilty. The evi dence against him was entirely insufficient, the allegations of some of the witnesses as reported in last week's issue of the Herald, not being supported at all, and in some cases, not even adhered to by the witnesses themselves.
