Hawkins, Paul Ed Turner, Robert Lee The Hoard of Exemptions for Halifax County is at last in measurable distant of the end of its labors in securing the first Quota of men from this country for service in the National Army. 190 men have been certified for service to the District Board at Goldsboro and roughly 60 more will be certified out of the first three calls of M2 men. Wednesday, the first day of examination of the last batch of 400 mencalled, gave the following results: examined 134, discharged for physical disability. 22. or 16 , made claim for exemption 80. or 719 . Ly no means all of these claims will be granted, 20 of claims for exemption having already been denied. This community has to-date twenty six men certified for the National Army-probably nineteen more will be certified before the Quota of the county is completed. Baird on the charge of desertion from the Navy and taken back to Norfolk on the afternoon train. There was a reward of $50.00 for his capture. Just why young White deserted is a mystery here. He came here several weeks ago, ostensibly on a furlough, but afterwards gave away his uniform and offered several different ex planations as to the manner of his leaving the Navy. He is only sixteen years of age and proLably did not realize the seriousness of the offense he has committed. ! the Bureau of Animal Husbandry at the A. & E. College in Raleigh, Mr. McCluer will have complete charge of the Swine Division and also supervision over the Beef Cattle Division. This new position is a long step forward in Mr. McCluer's field of endeavor and although his friends in Halifax county will miss him greatly, they are glad to know that his ability is being mor widely recognized as shown by this important appointment. A minister home from the trenches has been recounting his experiences among the Scotch regiments, and one of the inter esting stories he tells is a wound ed Jock whom he found rather depressed, and on being asked whether he would like to dictate a letter home, he assented. There upon the minister brought a table witn writing materials to his bed side. He found Jock tongue-tied and unable to begin, so much so that the parson said after a while: "Come along, now, I'm in a hurry. We must make a start what will I say?" No reply. Frank Williams, of Norfolk, spent Wednesday in town with relatives. Emmett Matthews returned home Tuesday from Atlantic City where he has been spending his vacation.
