Discussing the discontinuance
of a good many country news
paper because war time prices
and scarcity of help forced them
out of existence, the Ohio far
mer says it is a serious loss and
makes this argument for these
newspaper:
"During the war and after
ward the prices of white paper,
of labor and all kinds of materials
that go to make a publication
have increased so rapidly that
they have kept about two jumps
ahead of the publisher's income.
Many publications of local circu
lation have been forced to dis
continue, at least temporarily.
"This is unfortunate for the
publisher, but it is more unfor
tunate for the community. With
out a good local paper, what
channel is there for the news of
the town and the surrounding
country? What greater asset
can a town have than a good,
wideawake, progressive, honest
' and fearless newspaper to keep
its people informed as to the
i local goings on and to help mold
local public opinion?
i Work to Revive Papers
S The people of places where
i publication have been compelled
: to discontinue should use every
I effort to get these local papers
on their feet again: and those
I which have kept going, but
I which may be making a valiant
struggle to keep their heads
above the surface of the economic
puddle, should have the cordial
support of the public and the ad
: vertisers who seek the trade of
' the locality. Wttn all thetr in-1
creased expenses, it has not
been possible for many conscien
tious publishers to enlarge their
income without taking arbitrary
I steps and many of them are men
i of such moral caliber that they
, hesitate to do this, lest it weaken
; their influence for good in the
future.
"Help build up and maintain
a eood local paper. The world
news is important and can be
I had from the city dailies; but of
i news that centers in your own
stamping ground and your own
home circle the local newspaper
is the only source,"
