No one can afford to miss it. Adults 50c; Children 25c. the Highway Commission of Hali fax County, seem to be in order and after going into this matter from A to Z, I feel that there are many matters that should be set before the voters of Halifax County. On Aug. 7th 1919. at which time the present organization of .L. Tt' I m . . . me mgnway commission was established there were four town ships in the County that had some idea of a maintenance or ganization, these organizations were poorly equipped, outside teams being hired, some organ izations consisting of one man only until the roads of Halifax County were in such shape that the voters wanted the County taken "out of the mud", and that is the end in view of the Highway Commission. "To take Halifax County out of the Mud." Under the efficient leadership and untiring efforts of Mr. C. F. Gore, as county engineer, whose work is pointed to by the High way commission of North Car olina as being the best organ ization in the State, work has progressed, and limited funds available for maintenance is the only reason why more work has not been done. Work in organization and buy ing equipment has been the prob lem before the board for the past year unui at tnis time we have the best organization that canbeobtained, fully equipped for business, working along lines for the best interests of the county as a whole, lhe countv has been divided into twelve parts, called zones, in each of these zones a camp has been established fully equipped, to take care of the work in that zone. Why should we go to this ex pense of. establishing these camps? Because there are, (and this is the point of this short article,) 700 miles ofcountyroads in Halifax County to be taken care of, with 300 miles of public roads added making a total of 1000 miles of roads. At this time we are concerned only with the county roads, and to show under what disadvantages Mr. Gore works, with funds available, on Dec. 6th 1920, we had 75 men working on the roads, or in other words about one man per 10 miles of county roads. Mr. Voter, as you speed over your roads, keep in mind that they are being kept in the con dition they are, with your money, and one man for every ten miles is the record. The records are on file, open for your inspection. The Highway commission of Halifax County has nothing to keep under cover. Other short articles will follow. us the pleasure afforded by the fact that he has received a sec ond invitation to participate in a program of the National Bureau of Education. Last year Profes sor took part in the program at Cedar Falls, Iowa. The second in vitation is to the confprence at Daytona, Florida. We are pleased to be able to publish below the invitation received by Mr. Akers. Mr. A. E. Akers, County Superintendent of Schools Roanoke Rapids, N. C. My Dear Mr. Akers: We are to hold a conference at I Daytona, Fbrida, January 21-24, 1921, similar to the one we held at Farm vi lie, Va. It gives me great pleasure to extend to you an earnest and cordial invitation to attend the Daytona Confer ence and take part on our pro gram there. I think we can take care of your expenses for the trip out of funds furnished by the local management for the purpose of securing some Al talent, like yourself, from the outside. Hoping to have your accept ance of this invitation at your earliest convenience, believe me, Very Sincerely Yours, J. L. McBrien, Director, Rural School Extension The Highway Commission Halifax County last Monday or dered a road to be built from Roa noke Avenue to Boiling extend ing Fifth street. The need for this road has been felt for a number of years and possibly would have been con structed before but for the war. The order for immediate con struction of this road was passed after a committee composed of i J. W. Smoot, J. A. Moore, S. J. Bounds, J. K. Dickens. T. M. Jenkins and R. L. The pro gram is being prepared under direction of Miss Crisp, Director of Public School Music. The children will take the principal parts. There will be no admis sion charges and the public is cordially invited to attend. Thanks The Ladies of the Presbyterian Auxiliary desire to express to the Junior Order, Woodmen of the World, and Order of Red Men their thanks for the hall which was iiaed on Saturday, December 4th, to hold their an nual Bazaar. They feel great appreciation of this courtesy. Everyone recognizes the fact that a good band is a town asset that comes in handy on occasions of the community interest. The The Roanoke Rapids band is in need of a few recruits to com plete the instrumentation. This is a splendid opportunity for the young men of this city to ac quire a musical education, and learn to play the instrument of their choice. Each member of the band is provided with an instrument, the best procurable and is paid for attending rehear sals. Every three months prizes are awarded to those making the greatest progress, and for regu lar attendance. An instructor is furnished, also a comfortable room for rehearsals. What is more refining or pleas ure giving in a home or com munity than music? Musical people are undoubtedly among the most interesting in the uni verse, for added to the education expected of every citizen is the advantageous equipment of music, the most potent force in the world. Quoting from a noted Baptist divine, "Nothing stimulates the love of music so much as practice in a good band under the leader ship of capable and conscientious director." The Roanoke Rapids band has opened this opportunity for the young men of the city, anyone wishing to join, make application to secretary for membership. POWELLTOWN ITEMS At the regular meeting of the Parent Teacher Association on Monday, December the sixth, reports were given of the State Parent Teacher convention at Greensboro and of the Teachers Assembly at Asheville. Mrs. George Taylor and Miss Ross, delegates to the State Convention of the Parent Teacher Association reported that the State Associa tion would soon join the National Association. Interesting glimpses of the work in other towns and cities in North Carolina were given. The work of Burlington seemed especially commendable. Some of its features were, rais ing $15,000 by subscriptions, the providing of a lunch room and library for the pupils, and a rest room for the teachers. Mr. Coltrane, Miss Crisp, Miss Hearn, Miss Powell and Miss Workman gave reports from the Teachers Assembly. Mr. Coltrane emphasized the importance of the survev as a basis for future efforts in education both in North Carolina apd Roanoke Rapids, j In this connection he explained the survey that is now being made of the Roanoke Rapids schools, and how this survey will be used in planning for the future of the schools. An in teresting report was given -on Physical Education in the school. The startling and almost des perate situation in higher educa tion in iNortn oaronna was presented to the members. These reports served to stir the Associa tion to an appreciation of the great task of North Carolina in education. The Association will hold its next meeting on the second Monday afternoon in January. prepared for college, and unless further provision is made only been made. The womans clubs of various those who are already prepared sections of the county were on may be taken care of. What will the thirty five hundred do? Have we a right to allow such a situation to continue to exist? If our youth desires a college education have we a right to say ''There is no room"?
