FIBRE BOARD PLANT t! Flames Started by Gut Building Early Thursday Morning. Loss Estimated in Excess of Three Hundred Thousand Dollars. Parti ally Covered by Insurance. FUTURE PLANS NOW UNCERTAIN State Students Attending Summer Camp. Ninety-four members of the Junior class at State College assembled again for training during the week of June 13, but the scene was far away from the class room and campus, and in stead of the text book, the draw ing board and the microscope, the implements of war were used. More than 2.0UU students from the R. O. T. C. units in the Fourth and Fifth Corps Areas, compris ing the states of Alabama, Ark ansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisi ana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Indiana, Kentuc ky, Ohio, and West Virginia, gathered June 1G at Camp Knox, Kentucky, for six weeks of inten sive training as a part of the plan of Uncle Sam for building up a great reserve force of officer ma terial to be called upon in a time of national emergency. The student-soldiers are fur nished with uniforms and sub sistence, transportation to and from camp, and draw pay at the rate of one dollar per day. Camp Knox will be used as an infantry training center only, the other army units making up the R. 0. T. C. being transferred to other army posts. The training at Knox will consist of basic princi ples covering the range all the way from recruit instruction to actual experience in handling the several units as officers. The State College rifle team, which turned in such a remark able record during the school year, is practically intact. After prelim inary practice at Camp Knox the team will move on to Camp Perry, Ohio, to participate in the national rifle matches to be held in August. The competition will be unusually keen as teams will be entered from all sections of the country. Colonel Daniel D. Gregory, commanding officer at the col lege, is mess officer at Camp Knox, while Captain H. E. Fisher and Captain N. L. Sim monds, instructors in military science tactics, are acting as company officers. NOTICE WhprpMO lirtrlul. ntiil M lIrtlui tf u certain deed of trust made by C. H. A field with plenty of material for the demonstration was select ed and three methods of remov ing the stumps were tried digging, pulling, and burning. After careful estimates the farm ers at the'demonstration and the county agents decided that the cheapest way, where the stumps removed were not nearenougl) to a town to sell the wood conveni ently, was by burning. As soon as an air current of circulation was started by digging and boring holes, the fire burned easily and in a short time the stump was a wreck. NEW PIPE ORGAN IN ALL SAINTS' CHURCH The new pipe organ in All Saints' Episcopal Church was completed this week and will be used for the first time next Sun day morning. It is the product of the Estey Company and was built by Mr. Geo. N. Bucklin, who has been with the company for twenty six years. It is a .two manual, tubular pneumatic action type, having thirteen speaking stops, and ten couplers. There are seven hundred and fifty nine speaking pipes in the instrument, and has an electric blower attach ment. It is the latest design in organ construction to the minut est detail, possessing the crescen do pedal, combination pistons and the stop action is the tilting tablet system. The organ is a gift to the Church from Messrs. S. F. Patterson and W. L. Long. Loyal Order of Moose Service Next Sunday. The foregoing parcel or lot of land is known as the "H. D. Mayo Home Place". This the 5th day of July, lftil. Terms of sale: Cash. J. A. House, 7-8-4t - Sheriff of Halifax County. ORDINANCE 1, ARTICLE 11. SECTION 39. Section 39. It shall be unlawful for any person, firm or corporation to open any house, shop, store or stand on Sun day for the purpose of buying or selling except in cases of absolute necessity, and if any store shall be found open it shall be prima facie evidence that the same was opened by the proprietor or his agent for, the purpose of selling: Fan in Drying Room Fire starting from an exhaust fan in the drying room at six thirty Thursday morning result ed in the practical destruction of the plant and machinery with an estimated loss of considerably in excess of three hundred thou sand dollars. The blaze was discovered shortly after its origin but delay in starting effective fire fighting allowed the flames to gain suffici ent headway to sweep through the plant. The fire pump of the Fibre Board Company broke down shortly after it was put in to operation and that part of the building that was saved owes its preservation almost entirely to the fire pumps of the Roanoke Mills Company which maintained a hose pressure of one hundred and twenty pounds during the rest of the fire. All of the build ing except the boiler house and engine room and a small part of the east end was totally destroy ed. It is impossible at present to estimate accurately the extent of damage to the machinery but it will hardly be less than a quarter of a million dollars. Ma terial in process and finished product storei in the plant, esti mated at about thirty thousand dollars was, of course, complete ly destroyed. It may be possible to salvage a part of the paper mr chine, and the boilers, engines and other machinery located in the basement and the extreme eastern end of the plant are prac tically unharmed. The building belonged to the United Industrial Company of which John Armstrong Chal loner is the largest, if not the sole owner. Fifty thousand dollars of insurance was carried on the building, by the Roanoke Fibre Board Company under the terms of their lease. The Fibre Board Company also carried thirty thousand dollars on stock and $210,0.00.00 on machinery. The plant had recently been appraised at $375,000.00, not including the building. The Roanoke Fibre Board Company's manager, Mr. F. M. Brown, states that no decision has yet been reached in regard to the Company's future plans. As the Fibre Board Company does not own the building or the site any plans at all for the future are highly problematical. The destruction of the plant throws from fifty to sixty of our citizens out of employment and is a distinct loss to the community in other wavs. Under the effi cient management of Mr. F. M. Brown, the Fibre Board Com pany had weathered a protracted low market and plans to secure additional working capital to en able the company to operate more economically and to in crease production had been con summated only a few days ago. Provided, however, drug stores may be kept open at all times on Sunday for the sale of drugs and medicines only, ana hotels, cafes and restaurants for the sell ing and serving of cooked food only to the public; provided further, however, that it shall be unlawful for any hotel, cafe, or restaurant to sell or serve any carbonated, bottled, fountain, or soft drinks of any kind on Sunday or to serve the same with a meal or meals on Sunday: Provided further, however, that ice dealers and milk dealers may sell and deliver ice and milk on Sunday, and garages may be kept open on Sun day. Any person violating this section shall be deemed guilty of a misdemean or and, upon conviction, fined Twenty five Dollars. Passed and ordered published this, the 13th day of July, A. U. ltfZl, by order of the Board of Commissioners of the Town of Roanoke Rapids, N. C. 715-5t A. L. Clark, Clerk 'SUNDAY COCA COLAS ! ARE PROHIBITED May Not be Sold in rug Stores or Purchased with Meals in Cafes Say Board of Town .Commissioners. Ef fective in Thirty Days. FIVE JITNEY LICENSES ISSUED Sunday selling of anything ex cept drugs, milk, ice ami "cook ed" food is prohibited under penalty of twenty live dollars fine by ordii.ance adopted by the Board of Town Commissioners at their meeting held on last Wed nesday. In prohibiting tin.- sale of bottled sodas with meals the new ordinance clamp the lid down on Sabbath observance more tightly than it has ever been before in Roanoke Rapids and as the ordinance is effective only in Roanoke Rapids it will probtbly result in considerably augmenting the present flourish ing Sunday trade in Rosemary in ice cream, Coca Colas and tobac cos. Mr. A. L. Clark, the City Attorney, states that in his opin ion the ordinance will not be ef fective until thirty days after its publication and it seems probable that the Morally Stunted will have this length of time in which to get accustomed to the new or der of things. The Board issued licenses to drive automobiles for hire in Roa noke Rapids to Moses Whitley, Willie James. J. P. Peebles, A. L. Pruden and E. L. Ennis. One apDlication w'as received from a negro to drive a car for hire, but the Board promptly passed a res olution against issuing jitney licenses to colored applicants. A new set of ordinances for the town was approved and ordered published in pamphlet form. Two hundred copies of these ordi nances will be distributed in the next few weeks.
