Earlier in the evening the nogro had appeared at the home of Mrs. Haye and she had ordered him away. He returned shortly after midnight with a crow bar, with which he began to tear down the door of her house. Whon he had torn out one of the ower panels of the door, Mrs. Haye opened (ire upon him through the aperture, tearing away the entire calf of his leg. Stewart was later brought to the Roanoke Rapids Hospital for treatment, where the surgeons had quite a job in removing shot and wooden splinters from his leg. He is still at the Hospital securely chained to his bed, awaiting removal to the Virginia Penitentiary. Mrs. Haye is employed by the Seaboard Air Line to operate the pump at the water tank and as stated lives alone with her children at this lonely spot on the Seaboard's right of way. ' A Cat Mothers a Rat Two small kittens and a young rat make the happy family of a fond mother cat at Enfield ac cording to the Enfield Frogress. The mother cat, according to the Progress, found two kittens several days ago, and on the day after the kittens came caught a young rat and carried it to her barrel home. Evidently the mother instinct got the better of her or else the kittens and the rat developed a case of love at first sight, for the mother speed ily changed her killing intentions and welcomed the rat into the freedom of the home. Now she is nursing the rat and the two kittens, while the adopt ed member has developed into an affectionate youngster, play ing with the mother cat and lick ing her fondly as do the young kittens. On top of that the new life appears to be agreeing with the rodent as he has grown con siderably since his adoption.
