TT WAS really to please old Mr*.
Nash Hint Peter Hewitt got Into the
habit of attending the seances with her.
Mrs. Nash was firmly convinced of the
truth of spiritualism and Peter Hewitt
was feeling strange enough In •
Strange town to value the acquaintance
of the old lady at his boarding house.
Peter hud left home years before^
when his fotlier married again. He
bad gone West, and wheu he returned
his family had moved and he was un
■bJe to locate them. Not that he tried
very hard. There was little love lost
and, after a perfunctory search, Peter
settled down to * Job and began life
anew.
< mu Airs. Nash was about the only
person he knew, and to plense her he
attended the seances. The medium waa
Isaac Pennell; the lady who presided
was his wife. There was a small regu
lar circle of devotees. Every Sunday
night the spirits of Queen Victoria, Li
Hung Cluing, President Lincoln, Julius
Caesar and others materialized In 'ha
astral light. Peter was pretty sick o#
It all.
But he didn’t want to affront old
Mrs. Nosh. Poor old lady, she believed
In it all so firmly. She was convinced
that Isuac Pennell, hopping around tha
room In a white sheet, was really Un
cle John. Peter hadn't the heart to
tell her what he thought about the
fa ke.
But the third or fourth time he came
the spirits begun to make a set at him,
and that was more than he could stand
for. They were pretty accurate, too,
and they elicited all sorts of facts
from him. They were alternately tell
ing him things and then worming
things out of him.
Of course It was simple enough to
Pet^r. He knew tl^ a sort of detec
tive agency exists among the fake me
diums, a clearing house of Information,
so to speak. For instance, a medium
who Is going to locate In one city haa
the private history of the leading fam
ilies of that city from his predecessor,
In exchange for what he had to tell
about the leading families of another
cl tv.
ouu, reter was worried. The knowl
edge possessed by the medium vras un
canny. It was almost as If he had
looked up that missing family of his.
It was on the fifth visit he paid that
the medium, going into a trance, began
spluttering something that sounded
like “Theobald.”
“It’s your Uncle Theobald come to
visit you,” Mrs. Pennell whispered.
Now Peter really had an Uncle
Theobald, who had gone to Australia,
and, rumor said, found a gold mine
there, ages before. How in the world
had they got hold of the name? Te
lepathy? In that minute Peter came
nearer to believing than ever before.
“How are you? How are you, Peter?'
rang out the cracked voice of an old
mail. “Peter, I want you to believe In
the great truths of spiritualism. Give
my dear friends, the Pennells, ten
thousand dollars for the Home for
Aged Mediums, and Karma will smile
upon you.”
Peter smiled wanly. “Where am I to
get It, Uncle?” he asked.
“Why, didn't I leave you forty thou
sand lost year?” whined Uncle Peter.
“Oh, if I only bad known then of th«
priceless truths of spiritualism. Only
twenty-five per cent, dear boy. I’ll ma
terialize to show you it’s really me.”
Something white hovered at the en
trance to the cabinet.
Peter was so enraged by the falae
ness of Uncle Theobald’s statement
that he seized the ghost and shook It
vigorously.
“You d—n liar!” he yelled. “I’ve
never seen the color of any money ot
yours.”
The sheet fell off, revealing the
whitened face of Isua<* Pennell. A very
□nghostly "d—n” came from Isaac’*
lips.
The sitters shrieked. Old Mrs. Nash
attacked Peter with her umbrella. Pe
ter and Isaac rolled to the bottom ot
the stairs In the dark, pummeling each
other. Isaac was trying to 9ay some
thing. . ^-*»">
“Listen, you fool,” he hissed. “Didn’t
you know? For God’s sake, keep quiet.
They were searching for the missing
belr six months ago. I looked you up
and felt sure they’d got In touch with
you.”
“You mean that?” demanded Peter,
in a husky whisper.
“Sure it’s true. WTiat do I get? Ten
thousund? Five? it’s a bargain. And
for heuven's sake clean up this mess
and save my face!”
A minute later the medium and Pe
ter entered the seance room arm in
arm. The lights had just been turned
on. Peter quieted the paudemonium
with a gesture.
“Fellow spiritualists,” he said, “I
have been converted. I understand now
that when I seized the ghost of Uncle
Peter it was transmuted Into the body
of the medium by superphysical law*.
Friends, 1 am here to testify to the
value of spirtualism. It Is—It's per*
fectly priceless.”
