Two new circles of the Firs1 Baptist Church will bear the names of two of the prominen1 women leaders of the church The Bennie Allsbrook, whict is composed of women living ir the Belmont section of the city First Baptist Church. N. Brown Thomason sexton o: the First Baptist Church, for the past thirty years, whose funera was held Tuesday in the Baptis church, will live on in the fonc memories of the Baptist mem bers. He loved and tenderly cared for the church. The church was always clean and with every thing in its place. Mrs. W. C Allsbrook reports that Mr Thomason was always there for every dinner the women had and was ready to find anything they needed. He took pride ir his work. Mrs. Allsbrook said he often came in her Sunday School class to see if the roorr was warm or comfortable in every way. There was never a meeting held at the church, but he was there, usually sitting in front, greeting each church go er and inquiring about members of their family. The children all loved him. Miss Mary Francis Allsbrook. daughter of Senator and Mrs. Julian Allsbrook says he never passed her. if it was a dozen times a day, that he did not smile and speak to her. Some good news we heard recently is Frank Williams Jr. of Weldon, grandson of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Williams of Washing ton Street, Roanoke Rapids, is studying for the ministry at Mars Hill. The following is an excerpt from “The Woman's Press'' which will be ot interest to the j women. “On January 10th. Judge Doro thy Kenyon, American delegate - I to the U. N. Commission on Sta tus of Women, introduced a re solution in the commission ask ing member nations to grant wi der political responsibility to women. Judge Kenyon believes that ’My county is in a most dis tressing state’ and quotes the following figures to prove her case. ‘There are no women cabinet officers, no women governors of states, no women United States senators, and no women serving in the highest state courts. In the House of Representa members are women. In the tives. only seven out of 435 states, nine have women legis lator; nine others have but one apiece, and the total number of state legislators who are wo men is 211. only seven in state senates. At the same time, it is esti mated that women own seventy percent of the total wealth of the United States; control forty seven percent of corporate stock; inherit eighty percent of life insurance; own sixty five per cent of savings accounts; and have achieved re cognition in almost all of the 534 occupations listed in the Cen sus Bureau. une migru wrue a doos oil this subject, but we will re strain ourselves A few com ments are however, in order.’ There are 6.000.000 more women than men in the adult voting population in the United States. Somewhat whimiscallv one would like to remind the Marx ists that these figures run con trary to their theory that econ omic power .carries with it. al ways and inevitably, politi cal control over a nation’s des tiny. Of course some women do vote as do their husbands or brothers. We cannot but re- j gret that, up to the present, we have no accurate means of judg ing our wisdom and potential power.” Liman w right Is Betrothed To Mr. Lyles Mr. and Mrs. J. D.
