Agent Jameson (Continued from Page One) country, pointing out that the Northampton County allotment is only 700 acres, of which he said 450 acres were planted dur ing the past year. On the basis oi an approximate yield of 1,200 pounds to the acre and a mar ket average of 45 cents a pound, the gross tobacco income for the county would be about $243,000. Jameson said the income to - . tals and averages would show j great increase over 1947, point ing out that in cotton and pea 11 nuts the price has been better ouu me jicm naa uccii sicoici. He said, generally speaking, prices are better on all farm commodities. He was quick t o point out, however, that the mil lions of dollars are not all profit. He said, for instance, that the cost of cotton picking alone has advanced to about $42 per bale, leaving little cash for the grower. He said he was oprimistic ov er the future of farm incomes, pointing out that better methods o f production and increased yields are placing the farmers in a better position to produce more farm products which are always in demand. Summarized income estimate totals for Northampton County: Peanuts — $5,670,000 Cotton — $3,740,000 Corn-$1,680,000 Hogs-$1,250,000 Tobacco-$243,000 India’s Leader Worries About Palace Luxury NEW DELHI — (AP) — Tie paradox of one of India’s sim plest and most austere men, a devoted friend and disciple of Gandhi, living today in a palace that was the symbol of the gran deur of the British Raj is begin ning to worry the country’s lead ers. Questions are being asked in Parliament and in the press. Is is proper that Governor-Gen eral Chakravarti Raiagoaplacha ri should ocupy a 340-room mansion, former residence of the British Viceroys, “where his foreign predecessors luxuriated, and draw more than 100,000 ru pees (about $3,000) monthly in salary and allowances? Indians expected a new way of life at Government House when the slight, quiet, 70-year-old Raj agopalachari (called “C. R.” for short) moved in last June as the first Indian Governor-General. A man who dresses always in home spun cotton, a vegetarian, a non smoker and a teetoler, C. R.’s preference for the simple life was well known. "Hue Dias were sent in to clear the famous viceregal wine cellar, C. R. substituted simple Indian vegetarian meals for lavish ban quets. He ignored most of the spacious apartments of Govern ment House and, with a widowed daughter, a widowed daughter in-law and four grandchildren, set up housekeeping in one cor ner of the palace. But there has been no real re duction in the size of the gover nor-general’s establishment. Ap proximately 5,000 persons live on the estate. These include servants, guards, the governor general’s office staff and their families. The mansion alone, ex cluding its 30 acres of grounds and famed mogul gardens, re quire 400 servants to keep it in order. C. R.. who as premier of Ma dras cut his own salary down to 500 rupees (about $160) per month, now draws more in salary and expenses than either the Pre sident of the United States.or the governor-general of Canada. The $4,000,000 vicregal man sion contains the magnificent Durbar Hall (throne room) more than a paintings in the mogul manner Gandhi once suggested it would be better for India if the great red and white sand stone pile were transformed in to a hospital. It probably would suit C. R. | fine if the government accepted i that suggestion now. — ! Miss Pat Rhue Is | Honored At Party !
