REPLY TO MR. MORRIS. Superintendent Rucker Furnishes Some Evidence. (Special to the Kiitor of The Sun) Mr. Morris stated a truth when he said that I was anxious that this contro versy be closed. I could wish that it had never been commenced if wishing would undo the evil already done. Its only visible effects are the division of many of our jieople into factions ready to oppose and distort the smallest mis takes of their opponents into intentional wrongdoing; and to make enemies of those whose life-long friendships have been among their most cherished pos sessions. Why all tins? The people know and are becoming wearied with it. I have gone over Mr. Morris's papers with him. He is welcome to one or as many com mittees as he may wish. I shall enter no protest to report of any competent com mittee he may select. This was and is a personal question and the public would be gladly rid of it, and so far as I am concerned I propose that I shall not afflict them very much longer. Mr. Morris has repeatedly charged me with favoritism in the issue of cer tain certificates to students of Union Mills Academy. Having casually met C. S. and Clvde Calton of teunshine Institute, I have their permission to use their names as references that they were certificated in the same way. This letter from Prof. S tailings will verify statements made by me in former articles, so far as Sunshine Institute is concerned. Big Lick Academy, D. M. S tailings, A. M., Prin., Big Lick, N. C, April 14, '03 Dear Prof . Rucker: Owing to your addressing me at Mathews your letter of the ?th has just reached me. In reply I shall say that you certainly issued cer tificates on my grading from Sunshine Institute while I was engaged in work ing in the county. In fact, you never refused to extend that courtesy to me as long as I was engaged in work in the county. I distinctly remember of your telling me time and again, that you had never lost anything by taking my grades. With best wishes, I am, your friend D. M. STALLINGS. Having written to no other leading teacher. Mr. Morris can make such in quiries as he may wish. One other question with a threat is propounded which I shall decline to answer until it shall become entirely necessary. If Mr. Morris thinks bring ing an innocent and inoffensive young lady's name into his personal wrangle will be of any service to him, he must accept the whole responsibility of doing so. A good plan is not to cress the river until you get to it ; but, if Mr. Morris shall force me to the bank, I will go over. A. L. RUCKER, County Supt. Dr. Wakefield Coming. Dr. W. H.
