Clarke of Arkansas was chosen for president pro tempore of the Senate by the Democratic caucus- Senatoi Clarke defeated Senator Pomeren after a spirited contest. Tfee vote wa 28 to 23. Senator Pomerene was supported by members who urged that the Ar kansas Senator should not be re elected because of nis revolt against the ship-purchase bill at the last ses sion. After the vote was taken. Sen ator Pomerene moved to make the choice of Senator Clarke unanimous and this was done by a rising vote.
