POETRY, For The Star A LEAF FROM REAL UFE. BY ECALLAW. Vain, hollow world Why cling my heart to thee ? My soul still clasps thy glittering'charms ; And yet, would fain be free. Thy pleasures sin My wandering passions And yet, from all their tempting joys, I nought but sorrow reap. A moment's joy, O'er which sad hours roll Hi . 'V Is all that thou hast given me, To satisry my soul. Oh ! tbou art falsa And worthless ! all thy charms Are but delusive phantoms, which el ude My eager, outstretched arms , But still my soul Returns to thee again, To sip thy drop of tempting sweet Thy draught of bitter pain. The sinful world A current deep and strong On whose dark waves I drifting float, Bourne helplessly along. Mywml in vain Struggles to break the chain, And rise into that higher life, Where calm, true pleasures reign. Is there no hope? Must I remain thus low? Can I not yet the victory gain Over my mighty foe ? Say happy ones, Who walk above th strife,' How did you wean your hearts from earth And reach that happy life ? Will you not help A brother, who would fain Forsake .earth's sinful charms and come To walk with you again? To Thee, oh Lord ! , To Thee for aid turn, Oh ! heln me to forsake the world . i ... And truer wisdom learn. Thou, Thou alone . My hopeless case canst cure, Wilt thou not wash my sin-dyed soul, And make me once more pure ? Remove the oharms, From which I cannot part, And give me of thy purer joys To fill my empty heart. BROWN & PERKINS, PUBLISHERS OF SHEET MUSIC AND MUSIC BOOKS.
