"Vrc learn from our exchanges, that the prisoners arrcstcdby-JGol.-Kuk, have "been brought before Chief Justice Pearson, and Judge' Ulbok; of the U. S. District Court, under wriU oabcseurjnL8. We uUo observe that those whowcjro carried before Mr. Pearson are undergoing a strict examination, while those carried before Judge Brooks have been d.ischargeYl ibr hick of evidence. The. Standanl. claims that there is abundance of evidence; against the parties ar rested, and that although some of them' have been released bv Jude JlJlooks, they Ayill be taken, up again und brought before some one of the State Judges, vhere they wilkbc tried for the 'offences charged against them. "Wo hope I this may he soand that the in vestigation may be continued until the last one of the cmiltv paity are brought to trial, convic ted and severely punished. , This is truly a serious .matter, and 'ought, to be settled by the strictest administration of the ' law. If tlio parties arrested are guilty surely they ought to be , Iunishcd to the fullest extent of .the law in; such cases. If they are not guilty, and there is no widencc to convict them, then they should not have been arres ted, and certainly should be dis-i-harged, hut we cannot fbelieve that Gov. Holdcn would have persued such a reckless course, as to. have so r many men arrested upon such gravp charges without sufficient r evidence. If he has, then, ve say he has made a very grave mistake, but if, as ho says, he has the evidenco sufficient to convict the parties referred to, wo hope, ho will see to it that they are tried, and punished severely . by the law. If there is. such an orjjnni'nf inn, tlo JT? 1CU -w this State, which we firmly believe there is, and these belong tothe organization aro guilty of the crimes charged against them, and should bo released without beimr i punished, then tl.ere w'll be ' no nafety for life, jibcrty or property in tho " Old Xorth State" so long as tho Democratic Ku Klux party are allowed to rule. ...
