CONGRATULATIONS TO SCHILDS
With the opening of Schild's Department Store in its
completely renovated building here this week came liter
ally hundreds of congratulations to Albert Schild from
local businessmen as well as manufacturers whose pro
ducts he handles.
Schild deserves these plaudits. For 22 years he has oper
ated a fine store in Tabor City and now has taken a step ι
that makes his business in appearance unequalled here.
He has always had an unusual number of name brand
items.
We think it is highly noteworthy also that his many
friends here have so graciously asked to take part in this
congratulatory issue, even his competitors. That's one of
the beauties of doing business in Tabor City, there's not
much just plain old cut-throat competition — the kind
that deliberately tries to harm a fellow merchant.
So, despite the fact that we have about exhausted our
type with so many "Congratulations," here is just one
more, this one from The Tribune to Schilds Department
Store — "Congratulations." We are very proud to have
such a modern store in Tabor City.
SBI AND SHERIFF'S DEPT.
The FBI deserved a lions share of the credit in the first
arrests of ex-Ku Klux Klansmen in our county and they:
received just that. And we still say "thank God for the
FBI."
But with the subsequent arrests of other alleged night
floggers, let us also take our hats off to the State Bureau ι
of Investigation and to the county Sheriff's department.
They helped immensely in the first crackdown and carried
out the second without the FBI. It was a slow and tedious
job to bring charges against persons for these outrages,
but hard work has shown results and we are proud of the
law enforcement officers both Federal, State and county
who have taken part. Our best bow t® them all.
ONE MORE BEST BOW
We must pass out some orchids to one more group. That
is the local Red Devil basketball team. In the face of hav- j
ing no gymnasium ready to practice in prior to the first
game here in the fall, the cagers put out maximum effort,
learned the fundamentals of the game, and won the dis
trict championship.
The winning of this district crown, gave them the invita
tion to compete against three other Class AA teams for
the right to enter the State tournament.
If they go no further, they have represented Tabor City
well. Each and every player deserves your handshake, as
does Coach S. W. Caruso and every other persons affiliat
ed with the team, right down to the water boy.

New Yorker Picks
Truman Over Taft
An 82-year-old retired New
Yorker who says his candidate
has won in every presidential]
election he has voted in, has
this prediction on the campaign
this year:
"If Truman runs again and
Taft is nominated, he will beat
the pants off Truman, unlesr
Gen. Eisenhower returns to this
country and campaigns, in which
case Eisenhower would likely be
elected."
George C. Van Buren, retired
coal and grain business operator
from Amsterdam. Ν. Y., also de
clares that he would vote for
Taft "in preference to Truman."
as Taft is "better qualified in
every way, has been in Washing
ton a long time, knows what it is
all about, is very capable and a
man of unimpeachable integ
rity."
Mr. Van Buren retired about
eight years ago and now lives at
Briarcliffe Acres with his son
having moved there in Septem
ber. 1950.
As evidence that he has voted
in many elections, it can be cited
that he was in Mobile. Ala.r
drinking a mint julep when the
battleship Maine was sunk at
Cuba, bringing on the war with
Spain.
Each morning the United
States has an additional 7,000
persons to feed and clothe. This
rate of increase has been going
on for several years and is con
tinuing. Also, percapita consump
tion of food is 13 per cent higher
than the prewar average.
QUESTION: When snoum
shrubs and seedlings be set out?
ANSWER: John H. Harris, ex
tension horticultural specialist
I as State College, says any time
between now and the last of
March is a good time to do trans
planting. Pick out a day when
the soil isn't too wet. If your
plants arrive when the soil is wet
or frozen, keep them outdoors,
open the package and pile soil,
sawdust, or sand around the
roots and keep this moist until
they can be planted.
QUESTION: How much better
fat must a dairy cow produce
each year to be profitable for her
owner?
ANSWER: A summary of
Dairy Herd Improvement Asso-I
ciation records for 1950 shows
that a dairy cow must be a high j
producer if she is to mane iuuuW
ι for her owner. The cow produc
ing 200 pounds of butterfat for
the year returned only $126
above feed cost as compared to
$274 returned by the animal pro
ducing 300 pounds of butterfat.
When production increased to
400 pounds, the return above
feed cost jumped to $391.
Dairy specialists at StateCoi
lege point out that this is an J"
erage increase of $128 retL
over feed cost for each 100-pOunJ
increase in butterfat production
"From this," say the special
isfcs, "we may expect an increa*
ed return of more than $1 for
each pound of butterfat increase
By increasing the production of
our cows we can increase 0Ur
returns."
