MISSY, HOWDY!
Apparently, the only thing wrong with the Great Ameri
can Secretary is that there aren't enough of her. In com
menting on a shortage "that has become a matter of serious
concern throughout the business community", Secretary of
Commerce Charles Sawyer gives the top-level nod to Na
tional Secretaries Week . . . when, from June 1st to 7th,
recognition is expected to descend in an irridescent shower
of praise on the "gril Fridays" of American business.
In discussing the up-coming occasion with the Chairman
of the National Secretaries Week Council, C. King Wood
bridge, President of the Dictaphone Corporation and Mrs.
Mary H. Barrett, President of thte National Secretaries As
sociation, Mr. Sawyer offered some idas on how to relieve
the shortage. "Many individual business men," he said*
"may be passing up good secretaries among older workers,"
and added that they "may also be using good secretarial
talent to perform office tasks that could be done by those
with lesser skills."

"Secretaries as a group arc
said Mr. Woodbridge. ". . . it's about time we realized
what a fine, competent job they are doing for private in
dustry." He went on to point out that during World'Wars
I and II we knocked ourselves out cheering Rosie the Ri
veter, but forgot the girl who kept things humming at
"headquarters." The work of the secretary, he said "was
important then, and it's even more important in the cold
war of today."
Hight point of National Secretaries Week is "Secretaries
Day," June 4th. "That's the day," Woodbridge said, "to
tip your hat and give her your best smile . . . the one that
says 'I'm mighty glad you're around'."
NO PINK TEA
Five htousand embattled Daughters of the American
Revolution, in their 61st annual convention in Washington,
rejected the plea of President Truman that they support
the United Nations, approved resolutions condemning
world government and demanding a "personal" inspection
and tally of tthe gold in Fort Knox by a Congressional
Committee.
: Speaking on "Foreign Entanglements," Rep. John T.
Wood (Rep.) of Idaho, won tremendous applause when
he described the U. N. Charter as "the most hideous inter
national document of all time," and again when he re
ferred to Secretary of State Acheson as "that high-priest
of destruction . . . who, though a mere hired hand, is the
real president of the United States."
