THE BIEGEST SUCCESS ΤΕΤ It's all over. Just a little more cleaning up and it will be forgotten, at least forgotten here. But the 1952 Fifth Annual Carolinas Yam Festival will long be remembered over the nation. Many, many people who were never here before in Yam Festival time made the visit this time, and those people will long remember what they saw here. With the conclusion of this year's event, by far the most successful Yam Festival in our five year history, came to a close. Never before have as many people at tended the three day event. And never before have as many people been in Tabor City on one day as were here last Friday. In a nut shell, it was the daddy rabbit of the festivals so far, and we should feel justly proud. As in past year's when we attempt to pat those persons on the back who so roundly deserve it, it is all but impossi ble to mention everyone in Tabor City whose efforts should not go unappreciated and unrecognized. But this year we must take particular pride in the all out effort put forth by Mr. and Mrs. J. Oliver Prince. As co-chairmen of the event, they found their time occupied and their hands full for many weeks. They responded in true heroic fashion and did a magnificent job. In most resDects. the festival was very weil organized. Only a few lapses marred its almost perfect planning. And again A. C. Edwards, honorary chairman after two years as head man, deserves some further applause. He did a fine job at the press dinner attended by almost 200 people, and was an all-around guiding light for the prob lems of staging this type event. Not to say something about the efforts of Mrs. Evelyn Leonard would be most unfair. She handled the advance publicity on the festival along with a dozen other details and despite all the work did an excellent job. The huge crowd that milled around the Tabor City streets is proof of the greatness of her success in the publicity phase of! her task. Without the advantages of advertising funds, Mrs. Leonard still was able to spread the word of the fifth festival far and wide and succeeded in breaking our last year's attendance record. And that all-important task of raising funds through booth selling was again in the hands of Tabor City's best sales lady. Mrs. B. A. Garrell has had that mammouth job for three successive seasons and on every occasion she has filled the shoes of that committee in a way that no one else could have done. Without her successful efforts, the yam festival could not be held. Thus in the long run, Mrs.1 Garrell might well take credit for the event being held at all. For the part that the L-ivnan ciuo pia^eu, mc Legion, the Woman's Club, the school, and many others, j we salute you with pride for a job well done. To Charlie Raper, county agent, to Sam Jackson and other agriculture teachers, and to the N. C. State College specialists, we say, "thanks, very much." And to all the others who played a part in its success, we offer the gratitude of Tabor City, especially to the! various Home Demonstration Clubs throughout the county who put their heart and soul in this year's big event. We doubt seriously that anyone in Tabor City this morn-, ing would say the Yam Festival is not a great thing for Tabor City. When time comes to plan another, we will think back over all the hard work involved and wonder if it is worth while. But now while the thought of the wide spread publicity is still fresh in your mind, now while you - can still see thousands of visitors who came to our town, is the time to make up our minds to continue to go forward, ever forwards, with each succeeding festival bigger and better than the one just passed. We are learning and per haps some time our children might be relaxing some Wed nesday morning after a yam festival and say "Well the Seventy-Fifth Annual Carolinas Yam Festival sure was a wonderful event. And we set an all time attendance re cord with that 100,000 people who attended the parade last Friday." WAIT FOR THE WINNER When nominees for the Presidency of the United State were made, just about every poll in the country said that Eisenhower was a way out in front in the country and the public favored him over Stevenson in no uncertain terms. But as the November 4 election day draws nearer, the Stevenson forces continue to gain in public support until today most polls say that the two candidates are running just about neck and neck. The next two weeks of political campaigning thus is supposed to decide who our next President will be. Mean time, most of us have our minds made up as to whom we will vote for but not many of us have any surefire feeling that our man will make the White House. We will just have to wait for the winner and hope for improvement regardless of which candidates makes the grade. Had to miss seeing the pretty girls parade around for Ihe choosing of the queen and that ilone is enough to make you stay >ick longer. But from all the pictures of the lew queen that have been made, obviously the judges did not need any spectacles. She is truly a beauty but then when all of them are, I guess it still makes the se lection a little difficult. This year's queen hails from the State of South Carolina and marks the first time that a queen has been chosen who lived in the Palmetto State. So perhaps it was a fine choice in addition to her being truly the beauty pick. The Festival is a two state affair and is known as the ''Carolinas" Yam Festival Thus it's good to have the beauties entering the event from both the Carolinas and good 3ITY, Ν. C. Death Claims Buck Creek Farmer William Henry Price, 72, retired farmer of the Buck Creek section of Horry County died Thursday afternoon at his home after an ill ness of 10 years. He was born in Marion County, S. C., son of the late George Melton and Mary E. Moody Price. Funeral services were held Sat urday afternoon at 2:00 at the Camp Swamp Methodist church, Loris, S. C., route 2 with the Rev. Smoak, pastor, officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. He was a member of the Camp Swamp church for 26 years. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lula Lewis Price, route 2, Loris; two sons, Henry M. Price of New York, Ν. Y., and Berkley Price of Neward, N. J.; one daughter, Mrs. Joseph Patrick of Charleston, S. C.; two sisters, Mrs. R. E. Rogers, and Mrs. E. P. Roogers both of Mullins, S. C. OOPS! WRONG LINE! Amy was one of the most popu lar girls in town, and when she was married, the church was crowded. After the ceremony, everyone rushed to kiss the bride. After about half an hour the breathless girl looked puzzled, and looking down at one little man, she said, "I don't know you. Why are you kissing me? The little man scratched his head. "I dunno, lady. When I joined this line outside, I under stood it was for hamburger." that a Palmetto lady received this year's honors. It was also noteworthy that we had so many fine looking local girls from the surrounding coun tryside. We local people have long known that our little lades were as pretty as they are anywhere, but this was the first time we had so many of them right up there in the contest and showing the outsiders that we could capa bly compete with them any time. And as usual, Ben McDonald did a good job as master of cere monies. Ben's natural wit and gift I of gab makes him an asset to any function such as a queen's corona tion. It was his second year as toastmaster and on both occasions he seemed to enjoy it. The Coy Tucker band seemed to have a mixed reception. We have talked to those who thought it was fine and those who thought it was lousy. Thus it is like every thing else, a matter of opinion 'and personal taste. (ftljurrtf Simtnrg Mt.
