"(6) Our teacher shortage is very serious now. Defeating the Pearsall Amendment will, in our lopinion, make this situation worse. ,j "We urge you to give careful I consideration to the recommen dations of Governor Hodges, the Pearsall Committee, the State Legislature, the State Board of Education, the Directors of the N'orth Carolina Education Asso ciation, the State School Board j Association, the State Supcrin | tendent of Public instruction and the Attorney General, who, after careful study and consid eration of this matter, are urg ing your support of and vote for the Pearsall Amendment as the best means to preserve our pub lic schools "The Pcarsall Amendment does not do away with our pres ent Assignment Law which is now in eifect in Johnston Coun ty. It is a supplement to the As signment Act and supports it [in preserving our public schools as they now exist. "We urge you to study the proposed Amendment carefully. We urge you to vote your con victions. We favor the Pearsall Amendment and will vote for it because we feel that it is not only the best plan but the only plan which has been proposed which will assist in preserving' our pubic schools. "Remember: "(1) A vote for the Pcarsall Plan is a vote to keep the doors of the public school open as they now exist. "(2) A vote for the Pcarsall Plan helps provide a means by which l<K'al school districts by majority vote can close their schools temporarily should there! be an attempt to force mixing' the races." Tobacco Upward Trend Slows The upward trend in average prices that has prevailed since opening week for South Caro lina and Border North Carolina flue-cured tobacco slowed last week. According to the United States and North Carolina De-, partmcnts of Agriculture prices by grades and quality of offer- j ings showed very little change from the previous week. Volume was heavy the entire week. Gross sales for the week end ing Friday, August 31, totaled 59,149,543 pounds and averaged $54.97 per hundred. The average exceeded last week's high by' 39c and the volume was around' 9*2 million more. Season sales! were raised to 176,012,077| pounds averaging $52.96. The change in grade averages this week were mostly $1.00 and $2 00 per hundred with gains and losses about evenly divided. The gains were chiefly for low er quality marketings and the losses were more numerous for better grades Leaf grades made up around two-thirds of the offerings. Less nondescript was marketed but this was offset by a larger per centage of poor and low leaf.! Bulk of sales was poor to good leaf, lair lugs and low cutters. Growers this week delivered around 16.5 percent of their to-' bacco to the Flue-cured Stabil-' ization Corporation under tin Government loan program. Sea son receipts were approximate ly 20 percent of gross sales. Sales were suspended Mon day. September 3, in observance of Labor Day. H. C. Rowland. Jr., District Engineer of the Corps of Engineers* District officc here. Colonel Rowland said the Federal Civil Defense Adminis tration has turned over S1.606. 000 to the District to do the job with the least practicable delay. It was pointed out that the task will be done insofar as practicable by competitive bids on a county by county basis. For example, all streams or portions of streams in one county that are to be cleared will be put in one contract. The counties to be included are: Brunswick, Columbus, New Hanover, Onslow, Hinder, Jon es, Wilson. Dare, Duplin. Cart eret, Beaufort, Bladen, Camden. Pamlico, Washington, Tyrrell, Hertford. Martin. Craven and Bertie. The coming clean-up job stems from a survey conducted earlier this year by representa tives of the Civil Defense Ad ministration, Soil Conservation Service and the Corps of Engin eers. The survey covered 26 counties but only 20 were chos en to receive stream clearance funds Immediately upon being as signed the project. Colonel Row land emphasized, engineers and draftsmen were put to work drafting plans and specifications for each county. Invitations for bids are ex pected to go out about Septem ber 15 with the opening of bids to follow 30 days later. After bids have been opened the suc cessful bidders usually have 30 days to begin work. This would place the beginning date elos.> ™ nuvcmoer 13. V. 8. LUMBER OUTPUT United States lumber produc tion is holding steady at around 37 billion board feet annually,' more than a third of the world's output. This fact is contained in the 1956 edition of "Facts About the Nation's Lumber Industry," just by American Forest Products Industries, Inc., the national Tree Farm sponsor. Nearly all of this lumber — about 90 per cent of it—is harv ested from privately owned commercial forest land, the book states. About 70 per cent of each tree harvested is utilized today, as compared to only 30 per cent in the early days of the industry.1 Slabs, sawdust and other left-' overs formerly unused by saw-', mills ar«· now sold to pulp and paper mills.
