IN THIS CORNER By BILLY ARTHUR mere is hardly a citizen these days who is not concerned eith er about drag racing or rock 'n roll. Whatever they maintain their fears are founded on, I'm inclined to believe they are based on the fact that not all of us are hep to double combustion engines, souped-up carburetors, or what have you in stroking pistons, and, furth er that we just feci downright silly in saying "Set· you later, alligator" and "After a while, crocodile." We're just coming along fast er than we used to. It doesn't seem possible, I know, but we're really finding it difficult to keep in swing with the "Ages" that are popping up with regu-' larity. And it's disturbing to us and those who don't like to be back numbers. Folks were just as worried about 20 years ago when A. C.j Lentz of Albemarle recalled that' "we had the Iron Fireman Age Everybody noted out to put ii Iron Firemen in order to nak< their home· more comforUbli in the winter and to cut down on the stoking job. "Then came the Termite Age From what the salesman told you about the damage the ter mites were doing, you would have thought every house and store building in town would soon crumble. The termites got it in the neck during that Age. "Next we had the Insulation Ago. That big red truck backed up to many a house, and blew it full of insulation. That was some Ago. and just as logical as the others. Insulation kept the heat out and the cool air in dur ing the summer and vice versa during the winter. Great stuff. "And now, "Mr. Lentz said (this was 20 years ago), "we arc in the midst of another Age. the Cabin Age. After we passed through all the other ages and got our homes comfortable, then •vtfybody mhid oet to buy build or ltan wbln« If jm haven't got a cabin, you aro boo in the lower social strata." Long before Mr. Lentz's time people bad to have something tc talk and worry about. The) were concerned about the cus tom of "school butter"—throw ing the teacher in the wall spring or horse trough if he fail ed to treat the children on the last day of school. They feared the "fine old sport" of wheel barrow rolling would vanish if not Riven some impetus. The finally rebelled and abolished [one of the most popular sports of the 18th and 19th centuries: gander wails, wherein a greased gander was suspended head do\* η from a tree, and riders astride horses would race be neath and try to grab and wrench its neck off. Incidental ly, that sport gave rise to an even-now popular expression, when the gander's neck was. , finally snatched from th· bod; ι the crowd would yell. uH»'i gone goose." The Golds bo ro Meneng« moaned in ISC· that "qulotl and calmly, without a struggli the Goldsboro Velocipede Clu has deceased. A velocipede tour nament was indeed a grand af fair, but it has died from neglec and inattention. In 1898 th Wadesboro paper worried abou so many "rug hooking" partie taking women from their homes A year later the Alleghany Sta deplored "so many jav-bin trots at t':e Hotel William." A; late as 1!»"0. the Charlotte Ob server reported "Ε. N. Farrioi gave a trolley party yesterday' and called it "a waste of time.' Those were "Ages" too. At tht turn of the century, bicyelt clubs were popular, and thcr< were race tracks in every larg< community and on the univers ity and college campuses in th« state. In recent years, we've experi enced the Do-lt-Yourself, Air Conditioning and Outdoor Dra ma Aces And I myself havt graduated from playing footbal with an inflated hog bladder t< the pigskin, and from eating al the second table to buffet style And my lap wasn't built for ; buffet dinner either! It seems that I'm the victin of all the Ages. Every tim« someone comes across or deve lops something new, I'm mad« the goat, or I make myself th« goat trying to learn what it's al about. For instance, when I wa newspapering in New Bern, th home agent. Miss Jessie Trow bridge, greeted me one day "Come on. Billy," she suggest ed." 'Let's" play Stinkie Pinkie. She explained it was a simpl· little game in which one answ ered the question with a noui and adjective that rhymed. I was. she contended. designed t whet on's thinking and wa quite the rage. "What's an obes animal?" she asked. I bit. "J fat cat." said she. "Now, what' a lethargic flower?" I didn't want to play. "A lazy daisy," she answeret her own question. "Now, what' an inebriated animal?" I still didn't want to play. "It's a drunk skunk." I just walked out of her of fice. disgusted, because I didn' want to bo a silly Billy. Well! Now that I'm doing it, I'< better quit. See you later alii gator. PVT. WILLIE I. THOMPSON 7TH DIV.. KORF.A — Arm; Pvt. Willie L. Thompson. 23 whose wife. Norma Jane, live on Route 1. C. •1 Oar Coaafy Aid Social Sanrttr ι II Disabled children now have additional protection under the j Old-Age and Survivors Insur ance program. .1 Prior to the 195« Amend t monts benefit payments to a > child ended when the child t reached 18 years of age. This ( provision still holds for a child , who is not disabled. : The new law provides for the payment of benefits beyond age Ί18. under certain conditions, to! Ja disabled child who became .[totally disabled before age 18. | ,1 To bo eligible, the disabled, | child must be unmarried, and be dependent on a parent, step Iparent, or adopting parent who is eligible for old-age insurance j benefit». The provision also ap-! [plies in cases where the above1 mentioned parent has deceased. The mother of the disabled |child. regardless of her age, is jalso eligible for monthly bene fit payments as long as she con tinuM to hav· Um dl—blmi child In h«r care. The benefits would continue indefinitely into adult years as long as the child remains dis ab.t-d. In writing this provision into the law. Congress guve recogni tion to a well-known fact. Dis abled children are as dependent on their parents after age 18 as before. Therefore, it was felt that it was important to fill this gap in the Federal insurance program by providing benefits for children who would not be able to support themselves. Parents of disabled children should contact their social se-j curity office after Suptember.l lift«. Payment* cannot be ««J I before January, 1937.
