County 4-H'ers Hold Corn Meal Muffin Contest Can you b;tk<· good corn meal muffins? Well, Columbus County 4-H Club members ccrtamly can. Gayle Horne. member of the Mishop Springs Community 4 11 Club, was first place winner in the recently held Corn Meal Muffin Contest. Beth A vant, of the Intermediate Clov erettes Club in Chadbourn. was second place winner. These girls won a portable hand mixer and free trip tj summer camp, respectively. Winning honorable mention were Kitty Jo Lawing and June Sessions. White Marsh Community 4-H Club, anc: Marie Williamson. North Whiteville Community 4-H Club. The judges were very Jm piessed with the baking skills these girls exhibited and with the stories of th^ health value of using only enriched corn meal. The Junior Enriched Corn Meal Muffin Contest is spon sored by the Corn Millers" Federation in corporation with the Extension Service and it v. as held in the kitchen of the County Agricultural Building. The purpose of this contest in to encourage 4-H Club members to know the value of cnriched corn meal in the dkt as-· a good low cost food, influ ence others to use enriched corn meal and make better corn muffins, <«nd improve personal and family heatlh through the development nt better food habit.;. The girls enterine this con test had baked muffins at home many times using en riched corn meal which has added vitamins and minerals. A detailed rec -rrl was kept from the different bakings ard evaluation scores were record ed. They also wrote original stories based on the health velue of using only corn meal that has been enriched. Nor All Your Tears Wash Out A Word of It." MRS. ELLEN HAMMOND PAIR BLUFF - Mrs. Eilen Hammond, 80, died Friday ul het hume in Little River Neck area of Cherry Grove Beach. S. C. after a throe months ill ness. She was the daughter of the late Jack and Harriett Hinson of the Hudson's Cross Roads urea of Columbus Coun ty, and a member of the Hin stn's Cross Roads Baptist Church. Final rites wer* held Sunday at 2:30 p. in. from the chapel of Mcarcs Funeral Home in Fair Bluff by the Rev. O. S. j Long, with burial in Mearc.· Cemetery at Fair Bluff. Survivors include two sons, Paul of Cherry Grove Beach and Manlcy Hammond of Ra leigh; four daughters, Mrs. Emma Strickland of Cerro Gordo, Mrs. Sam Adams. Mrs. A. C. Williams and Mrs. Sam my Lewis, all of Cherry Grove Beach. S. C.; 22 grandchildren and 29 groat-grandchildren. MAt'DE RIC'll'\RI>SON WHITEVILLE—Miss Maude Richardson, 88, died early Sat urday morning at the Pine-1 hurst nursing home after an I extended period of failing health. Miss Richards >n was the daughter of the late Capt. V. V. and Amanda Smith Rich ardson ot Whitcville. She at tended local schools and later St. Mary's college in Kaleigh. Miss Richardson was a mem ber <>f the Whitcville Method ist church where she was ac tive in church activities.
